Stock inlet tools

I prefer my targets level and unmoving

Ok, I'm new to stock fitting. There, now I said it.

I have a stock for a M98 that fits the action well, but needs barrel inletting.
I have a dremel, but I'm wanting something a bit more professional. I have my barrel taped for free-floating, what tools are recommended for barrel inletting by hand?

I'm Interested in acquiring tools that will last, as I'm sure I can dremel it out to work, but finish is my goal. This is a practice laminated soft wood stock that I would estimate at 70% barrel inlet.

I use two cherry chisels and some Swiss made Pfeil chisels. In my opinion they are the best. Also the barrel channel scraper tool sold by brownells and midway does a good job too. And then you can never have enough sand paper.
Take your time it's always better to take many small cuts then one big one and ruin your project. I enjoy using hand tools on my stock projects.

If I am in a hurry I have used routers and jigs to inlet with good results.

Hope this helps.

2 Cherri's chisels , and the barrel channel tool from Brownells and black for Inletting again at brownells .
If in a pinch use some 36 grit sandpaper wrapped around a wood dowel . Go slow , I would advise against the dremel .
You can get by with a $30 set from Harbor freight , only if your great at sharpening . They will take an edge but it wears quickly .

Lol, I love this forum.

Sandpaper and dowel I can do and I'll look through cherri Pfeifl. I'm glad to have gone slow so far, but... Well I'm sure I've marred my cheap finish anyway. Glad it's practice!

Thank you and keep them coming!

I was just using a dowel and sand paper tonight.80 grit moves a lot of wood to start.
Go slow and switch to finer grit as needed.
Also as mentioned already I would advise against the dremel :( .
Don't ask why.

I took a 16" "rat tail' file and annealed it. I cut it into 2"+ lengths. I used a nylon 'emergency collet' to hold it and faced the pieces and drilled and tapped them for handles. I then rehardened the pieces. I like to 'finish up' with Jerry Fisher scrapers. My home made barrel channel tools on off-set handles get me to within 'scraping distance' fairly quickly. The tools in the bottom pic are some German made tools that haven't been available for some years now. My 'new' ones are made to fit the handles.
