stock high spots

Brownells and/or Midway have barrel bedding scrapers in different diameters. I use the 3/4" one for everything. If you can see where it is touching, scrape that area until it doesn't. If you can't see where it touches blacken barrel with inlet black, kerosene flame soot, lipstick, something that will transfer to the stock when placed in stock. Scrap the areas where you see black touching stock. When you can pass one or two pieces of paper between the barrel and channel when the action is screwed into the stock you are free floated. Assuming it is wood, be sure to seal with Tru-oil or finish of choice.

I'm cheap. I use wooden dowels and/or sockets in various sizes wrapped with sandpaper of varying grits. Go slow and check clearances often. I prefer .030" or more.

THANKS FOR REPLYS iused sandpaper and got to were 2 dollar bills will slide smoothly all the way to the action.

Alf is right. More clearance isn't a bad thing. On some of my rifles, the clearance is easily 1/8". Wrap sandpaper around a dowel (e.g. a broomstick) and have at it. :)
