Stock finishes for laminate

G'day all,
I am new to this benchrest business and have just started on my first custom rifle. She's going to have a Predator action, Maddco 1:8 twist barrel and a Nightforce NXS scope.
My part in this project is the stock work. It is a Remington 40XB pattern in laminate.
Now the stockmaker suggested I finish it with a thin epoxy using as many layers as I want to and I will sand between coats.
My question is, has anyone done this before and what was your result?
This will also double as a long range varminter. Can't wait for that!!!
This is a fantastic site by the way and I am already spending too much time here.

Cheers.

They are a very nice finish too. Thanks for your reply. I'll look around for an auto clearcoat. What are you doing after each layer, is it a light going over with steel wool or a very fine sandpaper?

A word of caution about stock finishes. Some produce polycyanates,sp). You need a postitive pressure respirator with a shield over your eyes. You can poison yourself very quickly through absorbtion through the skin or eyes. You can also very quickly ruin your lungs. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Sanding them can be just as dangerious or worse. Airborn particles are extreamly dangerous. Even the wood dust from some exotic woods are toxic. They produce rashes and other allergic reactions.
