Stock crack on new rifle.

My brand new Savage 12BVSS with exactly 43 shots fired and all of a sudden no more groups. Right out of the box the gun was shooting under an inch after a few rounds to bring in the scope. Shot 24 rounds on Saturday and was really pleased with the gun. Made up a few more rounds and went back this morning to shoot on the 200yd line and all was going great then it all went to shit. Only shot 19 more rounds before it went bad and had to give up. Thought maybe the action screws worked loose (I checked the torque on these before even fired) but no they was tight. Took the gun apart and found the rear pillar block is cracked and moving slightly, the front moves as well but no cracks. Time for a new stock, something with an aluminum bedding block molded in.12bvss 1.JPG 12bvss 2.JPG

Same rifle that has the weird stain on the barrel?

I'd take that stock off your hands for the price of shipping.

Knock the factory pillars out. Get aluminum pillars from Brownells which are 9/16” diameter. Drill new holes and epoxy them in then turn the stock on its side drill a 3/16” hole cut and epoxy a SS threaded rod just behind the pillar. Make sure you fill the crack as best as you can with epoxy. I have used Winchester and or Talley cross bolts to beef up the rear pillar.

A new rifle gets sent back to Savage" let them supply a new one ASAP

Had a split behind rear lug on new Boyd's stock. Applied glue and vice pressure over night. All better, then bedded action.

No different gun and no on selling the stock for shipping, lol. The stained barrel is my 6.5 Creedmoor gun, not having any luck with Savage here lately....

That's a glue issue with the laminate. Seems to be fairly common. I have bought several used stocks off this forum and another that had the same issues. Cracks down the centerline where the action screw pillars were drilled. One was only shot "a few times".
Closer inspection revealed lack of adequate laminate glue in other, non stressed areas. Savage will take good care of you.

What Blackthorn said is correct. Easiest method of fixing a cracked stock.
My M77 MK II in 25-05 cracked through the wrist, opened it up some and placed 3/16” all thread rod in there, epoxied the area and applied light clamping pressure overnight. Problem fixed and has fired several hundred rounds since then with no issue.

Cheers.
