Stock choices for newbie

I had posted before asking for advice on chambering for a new F-open build. I believe I have that settled. When I shot F-class before I was using a "tactical" rifle that was far from ideal, but I made it work. Now that I'm getting into a more dedicated rig, I'm soliciting advice on selecting a stock. I figure the stock will take the longest to receive (maybe I should order it ahead of the action?). I have mostly known McMillan and Manners field stocks. It seems there is no Manners F-class stocks. Do the McMillan F-class stocks rate? Or should I be looking elsewhere? What models do others' that are successful use?
 
OP, one thing I am wondering is what type of material is best for an F class stock…wood, composite or metal? Maybe some folks can chime in.

I am looking at the eliseo f1 chassis or one of the cerus stocks.
 
I think the stock reflects a bit of the caliber your shooting as well.
My Mid Range gun rides a McMillan MBR and pushes 6.5x47 cases, ( a much lighter combo )
My Long Range guns all sport Kestros Stocks and and push 284 cases..and are 21.6 lbs .
..just my preference or 2c Sir. YMMV

F-Open stocks...there's some decisions to be made here - design differences, material differences, price differences and waiting time differences...

I'm in Australia, so getting anything out of the US takes a lot of time and patience and money. My current two F-Open rifles sit in McMillan Kestros ZR stocks. They do feel a little bit different to a timber laminate stock but not in a bad way - I do like them a lot and they track awesome. 6-9 month wait I believe on these. Works out to be nearly 12 months to get one into Australia right now. They're at the upper end in terms of price, depending on how you spec it.

I have a third F-Open stock, a Cerus XR, but this one isn't chambered up yet. Looks sexy as hell though. This took 12 months to get and again, cost a pretty penny, but money for me with this stock was irrelevant - the moment I saw one, I had to find a way to order one, and getting a hold of Will at Cerus Rifleworks was not straightforward being on the other side of the world. Trying to get a hold of him now actually to order a second one but not having any joy...Again, patience is a virtue in this sport. Pricewise the Cerus could set you back more than a McMillan depending on how you spec it.

Can't comment on X-Ring stocks - never seen one. I have seen a Dima stock as well as Joe West, they're both nice, the Joe West track really well. Wait times will be one of your biggest issues, I'd also look to order your action around the same time as the wait times on BATs and Borden's extends months.

I've attached a photo of one of my Kestros ZRs, but I'd also get to your local range and see if you can get behind a rifle or two and see what's out there...

Action Type , FTR or F/Open ?
Custom Stocks = Time and $$$ .
Master Class and Doan Trevor do nice Work . Google and there are lots .

If you have a 700 RH SA or Clone ? The Stocks Urban Rifleman sells get the Job done well ....
I have 3 Open Rifles I built on them . They have the Aluminum Bedding Block ! I do machine it out somewhat
and Bed the Action and Trigger Guard .

He has a number of designs he uses. And compared to some other custom builders you are actually able to get in touch with him. I had one made by him this year. He started the actual work in June and the stock was delivered to my Smith within 90 days. Best to get in touch with him than rely on the information on his webpage. Great guy.

It is helpful to know which action and barrel make and contour you will be using before he starts the actual work as he will inlet specifically for both.

F Open, I believe I've settled on a Defiance Deviant.

I will start out with a 6mm BRA, then eventually get a .284 barrel for it.

This stock builder does not contain all of our stocks or stock options, but it does contain the stocks and options that account for 98% of all our orders. The barrel channel and action areas, are molded into the shell of the stock. All of the competition stocks come standard in a black gel coat finish.

This is not the general machined in action and barrel contour inlet since your action choice and barrel contour are molded in.

MSC-LRT
Created particularly for the King of the Two Mile competition, this MCS-LRT comes in two versions. The first version is for shooters running up to a 1.6” diameter action, and the second is for a 2” 50bmg/416 action.

Note that this stock is oversize to accommodate the larger diameter actions and barrels. The fish belly bottom on the forearm adds substantial rigidity to the assembly.

Take a look at UrbanRiflemans Revolution stocks for F-Class with no wait time so to speak.
They are really nice for the cost...IMHO....
U can do a switch barrel set up and be ready when your mood strikes.
and Hell have BC.z paint it for you too.
 
Stick with well known products. McMillan, Cerus, PRT, MasterClass (Alex Sitman), and Doan Trevor. There's an endless number of makers out there, but these make up a lot of what is seen at competitions on winning rigs. I am a fan of composite stocks and McMillan makes the stiffest of the composites currently made for the sport. I have not used a Kestros stock, but have heard that it is better then their prior F class model which was stiff as a noodle. Cerus uses laminate wood mainly, but also has some crazy looking epoxy filled wood stocks (think "river table"). I am suspect of the long term stability of the construct of these epoxy filled stocks. Delamination can occur between the epoxy and the wood because the wood will expand and contract while the epoxy does not. They are cool looking though. PRT is a tried and true design stock that is wood laminate. Great stock that I have owned and shot competitively. Alex Sitman and Doan Trevor are great stock makers and true craftsman. I recently received a new rifle build by Doan that is shooting great and showing great promise for next season. That one is built on a vintage composite stock that needed restoration.
