Steyr ssg 69 rounds getting stuck in chamber

Hi guys

I have a Steyr ssg 69 in a 308 chamber.

I am having some problems with the rounds getting stuck in the chamber once they have been fired. I have to force the bolt up and out to get the fired round out of the chamber and I am worried that this is going to damage the gun. It never used to do this in the past it is only recently that it has started to do this and it is a petty because it is a beautiful and clean rifle that I have been using for the past few years in South Africa.

Is there anyone out there that has experienced this problem before or knows if it is a common problem in this rifle any help would be appreciated as not many people use steyr in south africa.

Hi and welcome to the forum. It sounds like you're experiencing over pressure. Your problem can be caused by a lot of things. Carbon build up, called the carbon ring, can "choke" or pinch the neck of your brass around your bullet and cause higher pressures to over expand the brass.
Does it happen with all brands of ammo?
Are you shooting reloads? Lots of causes with that.
How old is the gun?
How do you clean it?
How often?
Do you have access to a borescope?

hi there my rifle gets cleaned after every shoot. It has been happening with all brands of ammo and I have only been shooting factory ammo no reloads at all. the gun is pretty old it is about 20 years old.
haven't been shooting it for the past few years as the gun belonged to my father now that I am finished with my studies and am back on the game ranch I have taken the gun and done a lot more shooting with it.

I'd be guessing, then. It could be a few different things. You should get a look inside the barrel and chamber. I suspect a carbon ring. Can you get it to a gunsmith?

  1. Have you recently changed the scope mount bases? if so make sure that a base mount screw is not rubbing on the bolt or bolt locking lugs.
  2. When you say you clean your gun does that inclued the chamber? It is possible that you may have something in the chamber causing the issue.
  3. Be sure to put a dab of lube on the rear of your bolt lugs.
