Stevens 200 Trigger

Ok I have dolled up 2 Stevens 200's one 270 Win and a 7-08

Both have Boyd Thumbhole stocks-beded and floated--SSS Single shot plugs

One has a BT Savage Bolt the other has a SSS TAC Bolt

Both guns are shooting sub .75" groups--very happy for a $250 gun

PROBLEM--Factory Trigger stinks-- I have already loosened the set screw a few rounds--that helped

Still lots of creep and they are bit crunchy

Is there a nice aftermaret trigger or an easy fix

Jim Briggs over on Savage Shooters site sells a 3 screw trigger for the 200. You can change the wire on the orginal trigger with a smaller diameter wire and that will help. .040 is the recomended size, I have some here that is .038 and will try it. Just cut and bend the wire and install. You can use a wire off a spinnerbait they mostly are all .040.

Like you, I own a Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 and 270 Win and mine shoot pretty accurately too. Yep, triggers on mine both left a lot to be desired. I pretty much solved my trigger pull problems by replacing the factory trigger spring and did some light polishing on the trigger and the sear. I found a suitable replacement spring at my local ACE hardware store for less than a dollar that was weaker than the factory one and cut it to lenght. On one of them I just thinned out the straight spring with sandpaper, weakening it. After some minor polishing of the contact area of trigger and sear, had my trigger pull down to around 2 to 2/12 lbs. Some Stevens 200 owners have fashioned the straight spring on trigger from a spinning lure, safety pin and etc. and also polished the trigger/sear contact area to improve trigger pull. My thoughts are the Stevens 200 is a low cost rifle, why spend the amount of money a replacement trigger costs, when a simple very inexpensive replacement spring should do the trick.

Call SSS,
The Competition trigger is bout the best bang for the buck. Close in price to the RB Sav 1 and Timney, but far superior. They also have 3 screw triggers (Just about the same thing as a RB sav 1 or a Timney, just less money.) if you would want to go that route.

+1 I have 2 SSS triggers and for 95 bucks they cant be beat. One is at a pound and the other at 12oz, very nice triggers.

The Stevens 200 and also the AXIS trigger can be modified by a qualified gunsmith below 2 pounds without safety problems.
Than it fun to shoot them ;)
