Steel Safari ?

I was checking out the Steel Safari article and think it would be my kind of competition. Your out in the field, shooting under tough conditions and at unknown distances, kind of like when your hunting. I am wondering if anyone has ever used a 30-06 in one of these types of matches. A 12 inch target at 700 yards is small but I figure if they can hit it with a 308 then it should be doable with an 06. A simple field build could consist of a Rem 700 in 30-06, Rifle Basix trigger, McMillian stock, a good handload and A leupold scope with custom reticle to match that load. It would seem easier to lug around a field weight sporter than a heavy competition rifle.

I am sure someone has done it, but they were not likely the winner. I am not saying there is anything wrong with using such a rifle, but the winners are using other calibers.

I agree with you that this sounds like a lot of fun. I have not shot on of these matches because there are none held in my part of the world. I have shot competition for over 30 years and find that there is a reason the winners are shooting what they shoot in all types of shooting.
