Steel Candy...Pics!

Joe C

Student of the 1911.
This has been a cool project to do for one of my client's wives. He is looking forward to giving her this surprise. In a nut shell it is a CCP Commander (cut down gov't model) in 9mm. Finish is polished and blasted stainless steel with a bobtail.

Front sight is a custom built dovetail gold bead. Rear sight is a KFS that I have done my non dovetail install which I think makes it very clean looking.

Trigger is one of our short flat ones with a twist. It is machined with a 10 degree angle to the right for very small hands. Grips are sunburst blue and natural box elder burl from Wickedgrips.com.

The gun has one of my tapered sleeve coned barrels fit to match tolerance. The recoil plug was made out of stainless on the new lathe. And the gun shoots great. Was shooting 5" steel at 50 yards today during final testing with no problems.

Thanks for looking and I look forward to hearing what you think of this newest creation.

Joe,

You continue to stun my eyes with your metal skills and consumate attention to little details.. But.. In all fairness to your QC dept, I think it would be wise for you to send an example Northwards for some extreme weather functional testing... I mean, what happens if you just happen to give that beaty a kiss and your lips stick to the slide??

And I know someone who can do that for you, no charge.... ;)

That truly is a work of art! The polishing on the frame and slide is very nice! PM me what kind of money you get for a job like that if you would please?

Thanks,
Mike

Awesome work. I'm curious about the muzzle. That thing looks absolutely square. I swear it’s like you cut it off with at saw! :) (I mean that in a good way) Does the barrel have any chamfer on it at all?

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I just really love what I do here.

Kingfisher, no offense taken sir. There is a crown on the barrel. Over the years I've learned that less is more if you want accuracy. I try to keep the crown less than .020" deep and the pistols keep shooting tight groups. Any more than that and they start opening up. My only semi educated guess is that the gasses escaping around the bullet as it exits causes the bullet to de-stabilize if the crown is to deep. Recently a friend of mine sent me an old article by Boots that basically confirmed what I had thought about this all along with his own studies. To me, the deep crowns are a fashion fad, kind of like white dudes (like my own father) sporting afro's in the 70's!
