Starting Stock on a Duplicator

Here's a few pics from start to finish on how I make stocks. This 1 was a right handed master I changed to a left handed stock for the new shooter. So I filled in the right handed grip with plastersine went from there. The finishing of this stock will be with a file, mill and a bit of sanding .I will update pics in this as I go along with the process.

No further work done in this stick due to cyclone that come thro the area Sunday nite. 100 power poles down plus a town north of us got smashed. No power for another couple of days yet so gen set running for the house and freezer plus charging of phone . Phone towers only got sorted late yesterday arvo. So it's just relax till powers back on the back into the workshop

Power came back on late last nite l.So did a bit more on this stock today flattened the top and 1/2 barrel channel but down the middle. I do this so i can recent the stock after doing more shaping on the butt ,grip area and bag rider area. Will inlet and make block for this and have it epoxied in as next week going to a shoot so will be able to do final fit at the shoot as the new owner will be there. Then back home to finish stock off and put it into colour.

So while the above stock is away getting marked up for hand grip position change barrels suite the owner hand I decided to start work on another stock. So we taped up the original stock and added plastersine in the area the owner wanted made a but different to suite him then it was off to make a new master. Once master was made had owner come around to make shore It was the correct fit for his big gompy head and hands . I can say that as he's a mate of mine who has helped me do stuff in my workshop as not being able to do certain things due have a jump start pack installed in my chest just over 12 months ago. So this is a trade deal works good bith ways.

Have finally gotten back into the workshop for a bit here's a few pics if what's been happening . Stock was away for about so the new owner could tell me if the grip was correct for his hand. After coming back to me a but had to be taken off the grip as it was a bit big for his hand . So after that barrel channel was cut. Ali action block was made and stainless recoil lug added. Block epoxied in with coloured epoxy to match final colour of stocj. Stock goes away again this time final test fit and for bolt relief to be cut in as I dnt have a left handed action pattern for bolt relief. Thenit will be back to get prep for paint and graphic/logo down the sides then off to pinstripes and back again for final clear coats . Then it will be off to it's final home .

Have also been working on a few that stocks aswell to keep my mind off health issues. These 2 still need to have a sealer put on them . Then they will have inlets done 1 is going to be a 7mm rem mag and the other will be inletted for a howa short action . Both will be on action blocks then into final colour and clear coats.

The plan is to eventually get a cnc machine for doing the stocks and some inletting work. But as it's a hobbie/sanity keeping at the moment you never know what could happen in the future. Cnc would useful for other things aswell as have mates who are into rebuilding old school bikes and cars you cannot find parts for us they wnt something a but different .

No duplicator work today had to make a couple of action blocks . These blocks are for weatherby/howa short actions. Will be on to rem short blocks and pic rails next week some time after I get a couple of stocks finished off

Bit more work on a current build barrel channel and inlet done for action block . Ali block inserted and epoxied in place with coloured epoxy to match fine paint work. Still a bit of sanding and shaping to be done around the rear of the action and bottom metal still needs area machined out on the stock.

These 2 have just been put into sealer epoxy . They will sit for a few days before getting sanded and ready for next stage . The laminated stock will get oriental blue candy sprayed over it. While the other will sit a bit longer till some 4oz glass turns up as this will be getting a glass skin on it before going into hok Martian green.
