Starting early

My 10 year old grandkiddo Kamella has an interest in mechanical things and building stuff. Today, she came along when I had some stock work to do. I've explained the workings of a mill to her before and related the cuts to the width of a human hair so she would better understand. So today, I've got this stock in the vise and she's moving the mill table for me. As it was getting close, I asked her to move it "...just a hair more." She said : "That's three marks, right?" After cutting the pillar holes, I had her go down through one to see how the machine feels when it's running. She loved it!

She loves the smell of the shop and is fascinated by the size of the hauler. The Cobra Jet is her favorite because of the graphics. She didn't want to get too close to the Pro Charged Fox body, though. "It looks kind of scary." Smart kid.

Puts a smile on my face. Four of our grand kiddos are into mechanical hands on things. Two girls and two boys in the youngest daughters family. The oldest daughter and her husband have one boy who isn't much into mechanical things.

You are so lucky she shows an interest. My 13 year old grandson races motocross but does no work at all on the bike. His father won't let him and gives me all kinds of bs excuses why. And it's not because he doesn't want to help, just bs excuses.

Race cars, guns and a granddaughter….. good lord I think I could only afford one of those. I can’t wait to be a grandpa. My oldest is only 20 so it’s gonna be a while.

I have two 4 y.o. grandsons who are making waves in traditional archery competition. Both their dad's(my middle sons) were shooting at that age but they didn't hold a candle to this latest crop.

So folks,don't give up hope for the future... some of these kids are more passionate than we are. Thanks for sharing post and pics.

When my daughter was a bit younger than this cute young lady, I was racing SCCA GT-1. It was a tube framed Corvette race car with a carbon fiber body. As I was working on the car, my daughter would be standing there watching me. I told her that if she was here, she needed to help by getting tools. She learned all about the sizes of open end / box end wrenches as well as all the socket sizes and where these tools were in my roll-a-way. A great little helper.
The bad news is that to this day, she still thinks that I can fix anything. Sometimes not!

Our daughters grew up watching and helping me turning wrenches on British and Italian bikes (Nortons, Royal Enfields and Ducatis) as well as an Alfa GT JR. and a Road Runner. I am their first stop for trouble shooting info. I know that when they call and tell me their husbands want to ask me a question that something is broken! Still makes me feel good to be asked.

My daughter called me when she purchased her boyfriend ( now husband) a bicycle for his birthday. Some assembly was required. He was struggling with ” her tools” and the assembly instructions. She asked if she she should just take the tools and “ Put the dam thing together”! I told her absolutely not!!! Her job was to “ Protect the fragile male ego” let him work it out! She was quite capable of putting that bike together.

She's got her eye on a pink Savage Rascal .22. But she's already too tall for them to be comfortable to shoot so we'll have to look at something else. The Bergara BMR's fit her better. She likes mine and always asks if she can hold it...I can see what going to happen!

We just built a potting table for my wife. I put marks on the the speedy square for the screw position and she did the rest. Being treated lumber, they weren't exactly straight. We put one down and she looked at the gaps to the previous one and asked what we were going to do about the gaps "...so it would look nicer?" I told her to just think about it. After a bit, she said: "If we turn it over it might fit better?" We did and it did. She's a pretty good little problem solver. She likes the sound the power driver makes when it clutches out.

She's not so sure about this one. "How do you know where all those wires go?"

The grandchildren are GREAT - a favorite shop memory of mine, was when "O" was here, watching me sand one the the EMMA CREEK stocks, and wanted to try her hand . . . unlike GP, who was, "making the wood beautiful", when Donna come over to see & asked, "what are you doing", "O" replied, "bringing out the beauty" . . . she was 8 years old. Put egotistic GP to shame. They've out grown me now - regelated me to pet monkey stage . . . ya stirred up some memories, and better yet, made some new! RG
