Springfield Armory 1911 grip safety

Unless the frame was altered the grip safety should be a drop in part

There are at least 3 different radius cuts used on 1911 style pistols. Some use a .250 radius (like Wilson), a few (like Caspian and Springfield) use a .220 radius, and then there is the original Colt mil spec. GR4 makes a Beavertail grip safety compatible with Springfield. A grip safety from Caspian will fit the radius, also.

By fit companies mean, "Not a drop in part". You may need very minor fitting for a Smith and Alexander safety to work. As long as the radius is correct, most are .220" the major work is already done.

I called smith and alexander. I was told flat out that they didn't have any that would work. As shortgrass pointed out there are several different cuts. The confusion i think comes from Springfields mil spec and loaded frames have different tang sizes/ cuts for the grip safety. The loaded models use a compound radius not the .220 or the .250. I have read this called a wilson cut. I am not any kind of gun guru so all this is new to me. it may be worth the $34 to buy a grip safety from wilson and see if it works.

I can not fault Springfield at all. It was a freak accident that caused the damage. I put it in a rifle case and the wind blew it off a bench, the case opened up and then it got thrown out of the case after another gust of wind and slid across concrete. I had kept the old parts but after 20 years I don’t know where they went or I would put them back in and send it back under warranty. The gun works just fine and it looks like I will just keep it as is. I don’t know if any 1911 smiths near me. I am north of Cincinnati Ohio. I had thought if I could find a new safety it would be worth the money to see if I could fit it and try to learn something and if it didn’t work oh well.

Surely Springfield would fix their own gun- you just may have to pay a little. You are dead set against sending it to them for repair I guess?

Springfield said they would be happy to fix it and it they could give me a quote. They were very helpful. I am not opposed to them working on it. I think i will send it to them. I was hoping since it was already cut for a beavertail safety that putting one back in would not be that difficult for me to do. The wilson combat full fit #298b may be my best shot at doing it myself. The biggest problem is that I cant find the old parts that I am sure I put somewhere i wouldn't lose them.

I still can't find some things I put in a safe place... At least they are not lost. lol.
