Spray Can Stock Job

I would like to paint a wood stock with candy color paint from a spray can. I don't have a compressor and will paint on patio. Has anyone done this with any success. I also wonder about cleaning solvent types and how paint will react. Shade Tree Painting

I do my own stock painting, both wood and plastic. Spray cans work just fine. Rather than using the cheap stuff from Ace Hardware I get the paint made for autos and motocycles from Auto Zone, etc. Costs a few bucks more but gives a better color.

The secret is in the final coats. Put on several coats of clear top-coat, wet sanding between coats. Then rub it out with rubbing compound, followed by polishing compound, then wax.

Thanks, I've done a mortorcycle tank or two in my day. Is the final coat left to dry and sanded or do I leave it alone. Is that 400 grit or finer?

I wet sand the final color coat with 800 (or finer), just enough to get rid of any "orange peel". Then let it dry for as long as you can stand it. ::)

It helps a lot to live in AZ.

good advice'
you can also get spray cans made up at Auto body shop suppliers.
Around here they will mix the paint add the necessary things like fish eye
preventer hardener etc, and put it in a spray can.

This is an update on paint job. First valuable lesson I learned is don't start to paint a rifle you want to take to the range next weekend. Primering, sanding undercoating, too quickly, slower to dry when multiple coats are applied according to time line on can. Now waiting to sand undercoat and then first color. Like the vulture said "patience hell I want to eat something now" thanks to all for good advice. Jon B
