Spotting scope stand suggestions

If size is not a concern, I'd recommend the Kowa 82SV with 27X LER eyepiece: $870 before shipping from B&H Photo....quite a bargain. Of the scope heads, I've owned the Stallings Machine Gold Standard, Ray-Vin, Creedmoor Polecat, and the Eliseo: found them all deficient in one way or another except the Eliseo.

Could you please elaborate on that? I have the Gold Standard and I'm very interested in any scope head that is easier to use.

I've been using the Kowa TSN-883 for a while now and having looked through a lot of other spotting scopes, so far, haven't found anything that surpasses it. The 25-60X eyepiece is very good but the eye relief sucks especially when wearing shooting glasses. So, I've started using the 25X fixed long eye relief eyepiece when shooting.

So far I haven't really liked anything for a prone stand. I've intermittently been using this: http://www.slik.com/DS-SPRINT_MINI_II.html
The tripod legs can go flat and by making one of the legs lower than the other two, this can become a fairly stable platform for shooting prone.

However, I am now considering building the "pistol grip attached to a flat aluminum plate" contraption that was shown in a previous post.

Hi Praveen, You may can get a jump start on your project by using the optional mounting plate that can be purchased for use with a LabRadar Chronograph. Attached is a picture of my scope attached to the standard camera mount on this plate. Not a great deal of adjustment on the ball mount but it does put the scope very low and has good stability.

Thanks Ken ! That is a great suggestion !

There are two types of screws used for cameras, spotting scopes, tripod heads and so on. The one found on the equipment like cameras and spotting scopes is a 1/4"X20. All tripod heads will have that screw on it to receive your device. The bigger screw is a 3/8"X16 and that is usually found on tripods to attach to the tripod head.

Many tripods will have a neat screw that is made up of an spring loaded outer shell in 3/8"X16 that surrounds an inner screw in 1/4"20. This way it can accommodate both sizes without adapters. You can also get reducer bushings that will screw into a 3/8"X16 hole and then receive a 1/4"X20.

You can build your own platform by simply using mounting a 1/4"X20 screw on it and then adding whatever head you want or even directly attaching the device to it.
