Spotting Scope on a Budget

I am wanting a "Budget" spotting scope, would like to stay under 500.00 and would love to stay in the 250 - 300.00 range. I want to use it to see wind conditions while shooting mid range f class. I don't need to see bullet holes and all that stuff, just mainly mirage between me and 600 yds. I have good glass on my rifles (NF) x2 so I do know what good glass is. I just don't want to spend a bunch right now. What powers and objective size do I need and of course any brand names would be helpful. Thanks

I have a Barska 20-60 that has been used at the range 2 times. It has a hard and soft case with a mini tripod and all the paperwork. It is in new condition. I know i paid around 200+ for it. You can have it for $125 shipped.

Big Ron,
Take a look at Optics Planet and see what's on sale. They have pretty nice periodic sales on their Spotting Scopes. I picked up a $500 Leupold for right around $400 shipped. And that's complete with a nice case, tripod, soft case and etc. The clarity is remarkable as I also have one of the "lesser" expensive 20x-60x Spotting Scopes which works alright, but isn't what you want for 100 yds+ shooting. Remember, cry once and buy once, but do search around for the best deal you can find as they are out there.

Unlike rifle scopes, we sometimes try to save a few dollars on items like spotting scopes because they're not as critical in terms of quality as a rifle scope would be. That being said there's nothing more frustrating as sitting on a bench trying to get a spotting scope to focus on a hot day when heat refraction leaves nothing but hazy images. I ascribe to the notion of pay once cry once; pay the extra money and get the quality you need to do the job you expect. A good spotting scope can last a lifetime.

As perry42 indicated, if your goal is exclusively to read mirage at 600yds during f-class matches, then you need a respectable scope with a LONG EYE Relief eyepiece that is fixed at somewhere between 25 to 32 power. In order to achieve that, you generally need to buy a scope, then buy the eyepiece separately, and that solution isn't cheap.

I shoot 600yd midrange F-Class too (shot a match this morning), and had to buy twice before I finally bought the right setup. I ended up buying the Celestron Regal (Model 52312) scope, it's made specifically for shooters, and comes with a 27X Long Eye Relief eyepiece. It's perfect for reading mirage - I'm VERY HAPPY WITH It!

Unfortunately, it's a bit higher priced than you're range, but if you have any flexibility in your budget, I assure you you'll be happy with it. The best price I see online at the moment is via Amazon and it's a$579.99. Here's the link:

Sorry to be that guy that recommends something that's a bit out of your preferred price range, but I figured at least you had another solid option to consider.

+1 on the 20X60X80 Alpen. Mine focused to see mirage at about 500 yds with the angeled eye piece has never lied to me. Also works great at 1K. Plenty of image quality to score at 1K as well. Fairly long eye relief. There are certainly better scopes but for what you want it is all you ever need. Got mine at Sportsman's Warehouse.

I'll ask again, what was the S.W. price? There are several variants of "Alpen 20-60x80mm" out there, e.g. waterproof or not, etc. for a significant difference in price.
