Factory Hornady Leverevolution 165gr.
Letting my two older kids shoot my 336 marlin in preparation for shooting a deer and one case came out with a split shoulder. This is older ammo. Purchased it when it first came out. Thoughts.

It’s not just the age of the brass but also the quality of the brass. Soft or junk brass is just soft or junk brass no matter how old it is.

I believe this is the first split neck from this gun. I've had this gun for about 30years. Believe I got it when I was in 5th grade. I don't have my headspace gauge handy to measure difference in shoulder to base length.

I just don’t think it’s a lousy chamber. A person could SERIOUSLY set a shoulder back too far when sizing the rimmed 30/30. When fired, what WILL happen is the shoulder will move forward. What is NOT likely is the shoulder splitting.

I agree with what others have stated regarding lousy batch of brass.

Personally, I don’t think all Hornady brass is bad. I just think the batch you got is lacking.

Bad brass.

Your 30-30 headspaces on the rim so shoulder location is basically irrelevant. For example: When fireforming a standard 30-30 case in an Ackley chamber, the shoulder moves forward. So when the standard cartridge is in the AI chamber the case is basically floating in mid air. The only contact is at the rim and (maybe) the neck.

Old ammo and just happened to get a bad case, probably hard/brittle and it split. One out of how many ? Nothing to worry about, just toss it.

I am like the rest bad brass, I would not say it is hard or soft either.
Buddy picked up some Hornady 308 Match brass for me some years back. 400 pieces, of that I ended up with 100 that did not split, shot in my F/TR rifle. You had to get a jewelers loop and look hard to see the flaws in the unfired brass.
Half price of new other than this was bulk, should have known if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

I have had issues with Hornady brass off and on in various calibers. 480 Ruger was crap. Yet I have some 204 Ruger that is very good.

I read several reports of this problem happening with Hornady brass of different calibers. I first got wind of this when my neighbor showed me some brass (22-250) that had been shot in his and his two sons Savage 22-250 (3 different guns). The problem wasn't limited to any one of the three rifles, the brass split when fired in all the guns. He also showed me 22-250 brass made by Remington and Winchester and none of them had the splitting problem. At different Forum's, I've seen the same issue brought up about case splitting and it's all Hornady brass.
