spider?

Anyone using a 4 screw spider for holding and doing barrel work? I have a new lathe with scroll 3 jaw, 4 jaw indy and 4 screw spider. I always used a spider on my last lathe with no issues but with this one im getting excessive vibrations and poor work finish. My 4 jaw is just to damn big I don't like using it.

I'm considering getting a new chuck of some sort but until then what would be the best way to isolate for the vibration. I dont have alot of contact area under the brass tipped screws. Im considering copper or aluminum wire, maybe copper tubing pieces.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

My spider only has 3/8 bolts on it I get chatter on my spider to. I have found that if I put a 1/2 inch wide aluminum ring under the bolts the chatter goes away. Mine is the one grizzly sells. I think I'm going to punch the holes out to 1/2 and be done with it.

You hit it correct Jkohler, I have a Grizzly G0509G Gunsmith Lathe with a D6 Spider same as you describe. I really like the simplicity of dialing in a barrel and how close I can work to the chuck. I tried some aluminum wire I had laying around and I did isolate the vibration somewhat. My plans are to get a smaller 6-8" tru type chuck for barrel work. I guess maybe I should try poking out the holes to 1/2" or larger for a little more grip.

Thanks

I have had real good luck with just putting a thin aluminum shim under eatch bolt. I then took a piece of 1 1/2 inch aluminum and made a 1/2inch wide split bushing. Works great now but punching the bolts out to 1/2 will be the best fix.
