Spider? Or what do I call it?

Mine shorter and is threaded and screws right onto the spindle.

Gene, the threaded spider or cathead is how mine is, and really like it. My wobbly old South Bend H10 has threaded spindle....lol

You run these at very low rpm. Usually less then 200.
Ever seen one come loose at 200 RPM. They don't come all the way out of the chuck.

Be careful. I would prefer to see a roller bearing rest in there somewhere. That is how I designed my extended spider.

Not meaning to be critical of the design. I just like the safety aspect if the steady rest in there somewhere.

Do you have a tail stock spider? I am a little familiar with the PM1236, I have an early PM1127V. I bored the through hole in the head stock out to 1.130. I use an extended spider for "bigger" barrels. The other bolts are at the far end of the head stock. Roller bearing steady rest on the nose for large diameter breach barrels.

My advise with spiders/catheads is to keep that exposed thread to a minimum. There is play in threads and long exposed screws like this one will cause shift in the part being held. Make the ID just big enough to hold what you want. Like others have said, only hold the front receiver ring, its very hard NOT to induce a bend in an action holding the rear bridge. You have to hold them so light they want to shift. Just pay attention to what you doing and check everything. You will soon find much better ways to accomplish the job with better results. Dont spend time making your tools pretty, if they dont work out perfectly they go in the scrap pile and you will come up with something better. If you spend too much time making a piece of jewelry you will want it to work...
