Greetings,
I am considering building a 260 Remington, based on a Remington 700 type action, and doing the barrel work myself.
I have a Hardinge HLV-DR lathe; it's basically an HLV-H. The hole through the spindle is 1.25". Has anyone built a spider for one of these? Any suggestions?
The rear of the spindle isn't threaded. I am thinking of split collar for attaching it. There is no lip to grab onto, though I reckon it could be made pretty secure by pinching the collar around it. The drive gear that fits over the rear of the spindle has a very precise sliding fit and I want to keep it that way.
Any suggestions related to rebarreling on the Hardinge or for the beginner would be most appreciated.
I have read "The Complete Illustrated Guide to Precision Rifle Barrel Fitting Book" by John L. Hinnant, the "Gunsmith Machinist" by Steve Acker, and "Advanced Rebarreling of the Sporting Rifle" by Willis Fowler.
Thanks and best regards,
Bob
