Speer Customer Service: F-

raythemanroe said:
Eric in my opinion is correct, your info you seek is pointless and apparently to Speer it is also. I PERSONALLY would have found it easier to appease you..I'm not a giant Speer fan but an F- because they don't care to measure your wanted boal..I'll worry about the important numbers..

Ray

I take your point, Ray, and respect your opinion. But absent any details of my particular situation, and why I was so curious about that bullet length, to say my quest was pointless strikes me as a bit unfair. But since I do not choose to go into details here about what led up to this, I can only nod and say thanks for the opinion. And point out again that the other bullet makers I contacted, when asked for a BOAL, didn't seem the least bit surprised that someone would be interested, and were only too happy to quote it from their spec sheets. (Nosler posts it on the web page along with the other specs. I wonder why they bother if it's useless information?)

Everyone has reasons and like I said I would have measured one regardless of my opinion just to appease the person on the other line.. My guess they don't make a practice of it for various reasons. My point and this may fire some Speer fans up, If they give you a number it would change with the second one they picked out of the box..JMO (useless info)

That's an interesting way of looking at it. Any published bullet dimension is subject to such variation. Certain tolerances are assumed. Ever measure a bullet's diameter with a good micrometer? Is a 22-cal bullet ever exactly 0.224" in diameter? Yet that's how the manufacturers describe them. Are they risking their reputations by being so bold?

All I asked the Speer chap for was the nominal length. I even suggested he round it off to the nearest 0.010" if he was nervous about it.

Sorry, but that dog won't hunt.

I do measure bullet diameter, I think it is a good idea when sorting bullets..I'm surprised they don't publish them so they don't need to answer annoying phone calls.. My guess is they feel it would lead to more annoying calls about numbers changing..

Hmmm, I almost reiterated that they do publish the bullet diameters, but thought better of it. You were obviously trying to inject levity - in your own way.

You should follow up with all the bullet manufacturers with the same question. You know, so you can give Speer a fair shake down and get back to us. I will hold all my purchases until your findings come in. I would start out with asking if they are all perfectly round bullets..

It's starting to emerge, but excruciatingly slowly. Subtlety is a virtue, but can be taken too far. Let go and aim for a belly laugh. What have you got to lose?

Oh, and thanks for the bump!

How is anyone here talking about figure being useless or irrelevant to loading?

It doesn't matter if the guy was asking the boal average, the ogive radius, the bullet weight or caliber, or the hours of their office..... the point is, he felt it was a useful number (it is, by the way, useful for determining how far the bullet is seated into the neck when you have also the coal, which is then useful for inputting that bullet into quickload.), the manufacturer can think the number is useless or pointless to know, but they were asked for a number that is freely available to anyone with one of those bullets and a set of calipers. No proprietary information there at all. Maybe if he was asking for the ogive radius or the boat tail angle, but even then, those are numbers that are of interest to some people and are easy enough to measure with the appropriate tool (and with many inappropriate tools).

This would be like someone calling GM and asking what diameter the steering wheel is on their half ton truck, gm saying sorry that's proprietary information. Totally rude and a crappy way to handle it.

I've never really liked speer bullets a lot, but to me customer service and the way a company deals with their customers in general is very important. I'm fed up with asshole employees and companies who think because they run million dollar balance books that one customer doesn't matter

Stop making sense. It's more fun to pile on the messenger. Or hadn't you noticed? ;)

PS I like Speer bullets - a lot.

Re: Speer, Remington Customer Service: F-

PPS

Coincidence. I guess it's contagious. This is the age of customer service we live in. Blame it on Republican budget cuts, what?

Six weeks ago, I contacted Remington requesting the screw thread specs for their older wood-stocked 700 Varmint's sling swivel studs. (Wait for it: Why would you want to know that? Why don't you just measure it? What sign are you, anyway? ...)

This morning - six weeks later - I got this "form" response.

Enjoy!

The CS rep you spoke with probably didn't know the answer himself and was too lazy to find out for you. Regardless of why you wanted to know, and regardless of whether it would be useful for load planning or not, it's such an easy spec for any competitor of Speer's to find out (by buying a box and measuring them) that the proprietary answer is nonsense. I am the manger of an office for truly proprietary products and I get calls all the time from people wanting to know specific specs of some of our products. Sometimes these products were discontinued decades ago. I find those specs out if at all possible and we provide them to anyone, not just current customers. We pride ourselves in our customer service. It pays us back heavily in customer loyalty for very expensive products.

Sierra has told me the same thing... and when I told them it is not a secret, would you please just save me some time, they told me that I wouldn't be able to measure it accurately.

So it is not Speer, all of them do it to some degree or another.

Tell me the bullet and I will tell you the length - Speer makes some great bullets - don't cut your nose off because of a jerk!

You might call back and ask to speak to customer service, and lodge a complaint.

Really? Hmm, that's odd. As I stated in the OP, I called both Sierra and Hornady - and they both gave it to me for the asking, and didn't seem puzzled as to why I would want to know it. And Nosler publishes bullet length right on their spec pages.

WRT your not being "able to measure it accurately": You didn't find that a little insulting?

Of course their point, had they taken the time to state it properly, was that bullet length varies quite a bit. But (again, if you read my OP) I asked the chap to simply give me the nominal length, to the nearest .010" if that would ease his mind. No dice. So that rather kicks to the curb the notion that it's the imprecision that has them worried, doesn't it?

Not to worry. I didn't start the thread to obtain the length figure, it was (if you'd read my OP) to honor a pledge I made to Speer to share my experience.

It's a good thing you didn't call Comcast and ask them the length of their Comcast TV remote control, and get customer service in India.

If you want to feel better you could cut out a section of a Speer bullet box and tape it to a dart board and vent your rage with darts.

I'm not sure if we have any trained psychologist or physiatrist in the forum that can help you feel better. But you might get a bigger audience on Face Book.

P.S. My oldest son is a criminal profiler and he said he picked this profession to better understand his father. (he might have read some of my posts growing up)

P.P.S. If you ever need Enfield rifle customer service just send me a PM. ;) (but remember all my customer service representatives are Dutch) ;D

Very insightful, thanks. I always marvel.

And, thanks for the bumps, chaps! This thread was idle for almost six weeks.

Have you tried Speer Gold Dot flower arranging to calm your stressed nerves?

In today's cost cutting world the person at the other end of the phone is making minimum wage and opened his binder to the closest word match you gave him.

I will keep buying Speer bullets and welcome to the real world where the stock holders profits means more than your question.

So just remember the old 100mm cigarette commercials when your looking at your bullets...........

"it's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long" ;)

This thread is simply not worthy of such wonders. But keep 'em coming, as you seem to find the precious time.
