speer 80 grain spitzer .243

Has anyone used these on small deer? I am looking to use them on muntjac and similar sized stuff. I use the 150 grain 30 cals from my .3006 and i like them. but i am just getting a .243 and i am interested in what to load it with.

Thanks guys

steve

What kind of range are you looking for? How far will your shots be? Are you meat hunting or not? If all of your hunting is close up, stick with 95 NBTs or maybe the 90 gr NBTs for those smaller deer. If you are meat hunting, go with a more controlled-expansion bullet or you will not get any meat. I know those 90 and 95 gr NBTs are good to 500 yards in favorable conditions.

Other favorable options for small-bodied game would include 85 gr Sierra, 87 gr VMAX, 88/90 gr Berger, 85 or 95 gr Partition and any of the Barnes bullets.

The 85 gr. Barnes TSX would also be a good choice. The BC is pretty decent and you don't have to worry about fragmentation. The .224 55gr. version was excellent on antelope out to 350 yards out of my .223.

sewwhat89 is right about the 90 and 95 gr NBTs. I had fragments scattered everywhere in the game I shot with 'em.

Steve, how much do the deer weigh on an average that you are hunting? The 85g Speer BT is a tough bullet.
