Speedy/Solomon SOD

Damn man. My dad did fine woodwork... so I was always in the shop... Built my own... Got attracted to cutting steel instead. Seeing stuff like this makes me question my decisions!
But there is no reason you are not able do both.

Holy crap outstanding. Now do a step by step on how to do this and material list please Brett. Bit hard for me to drop a stock off to you being on the otherwise of the world . Plus we have a poxy government

Nice job BcZ, excellent looking stock!!! Spear of Destiny??? Really? Sounds like the kind of drama a bunch of middle school girls would come up with. But a great looking stock despite the corny name.

Here's the video Speedy sent me
He covers different techniques for the exposing hard grain and color blending techniques, panel preparation and so forth.
Setting the red into the soft grain to tone down the heavy brown soft grain of the toasted maple my normal method stops here.20241130_145106.jpg20241202_113746.jpg

@Seagull
Forend was masked off to protect from Oh Shit I don't want red there happening. Lol
Now is when my confined lil box gets blown open...
Normally I work from dark to light, now flip it and work light to dark.
Surface was meticulously prepped for no tooling marks or heavy sand scratches.
Wet/dampen Surface clean rag" have a lot of these" apply dye straight to your dobber and work into surface. Lighten your preasure as you fade and blend take lighter color father than you want your fade as you next darker color will come back onto it.
Unlike a guitar a stock isn't flat it has multiple angles, sides, and details so you have to be conscious of this and change gloves with every color, this will save you from cussing yourself out.
Getting set up...20241202_113715.jpgthe jars are my "normal" strength diluted dyes that I used as a aid in blending and for the custom blended colors.
I have another @Southwest Action Works SOD in toasted maple coming from Speedy that were going to do in Merlo/Bordeaux/Red, it should be a fun and interesting project.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I believe SOD started with Speedy and Shurley brothers design.
I've done them from Shurley Brothers Xring, Cerus and now @Southwest Action Works with the latter being the nicest of them.
Just for you I'll call them "SOD Busters" here on out as they are generally used in Fopen. Lol

Thanks brother!
I appreciate you sending me those drops to experiment with couldn't have done this without you.
I'll dye up the blond drops for that project we're talking about and get them back to you just as soon as I finish cleaning up 2024.
Looking forward to more of your super cool stocks in 2025, starting with @Ntubito.View attachment 1616984

I have always been a believer in good ole ferric nitrate for bringing out the grain reversals in maple and giving a nice toasty reddish brown. But that comes from my flintlock maker side of the house.

Incredibly Sexy!!! I would have a hard time putting it down. After the first couple of months I guarantee you that my wife would get jealous of the stock. I see nothing wrong with watching TV while cradling a beautiful rifle. I'm pretty sure there is even a historic Texas statute stating, "There is nothing unusual or unnatural about a man spending time with his rifle." :)

I guess I only have one question. What's her name?! :D

Suggestions: Mary Anne, Ginger, or VERONICA !!!
