Speaking of rebated boattails....

@jackieschmidt has a post going about his 6mm rebated boattail project and in that thread people also mention the Lapua D46 design. This got me thinking about some old Hornady .30 cal rebated boattails that I have kicking around. I took several hundred of these in a trade so long ago that I can't remember what I had traded them for. They're 168gr and with a load of IMR4064 they shoot great out of my Savage Palma with a 1-13" barrel.

Can anybody give me an idea as to just how old these might be? I've included some pics. The box looks "vintage".

Thanks and a Merry Christmas to all!

Cool. Didn’t know Hornady ever made rebated boat tails.

They may not have been made by Hornady. Speer bought in .30-calibre Lapua match bullets for many years and sold them under its own name. That would be until around 40 years ago. It's possible Hornady did something similar with another manufacturer - if so, I'd expect them to date from the 70s or thereabouts. Certainly by the mid 80s, Hornady's thirty-cal 168 HPBT Match had a conventional boat-tail configuration.

(The other reason may be that as the rebated form is easier to make, this was Hornady's first 'go' at producing a .308 168 BT Match. IIRC Sierra's 168 was introduced around 1966 and was initially called the 'International'. It soon became so successful, that other bullet makers had to get on the bandwagon and make something similar or lose out on sales.)

Here's a download pic of a 1980's era Hornady display board.
It does show two 30 cal RBBT's. My 1975 Hornady loading
edition only shows standard boat tails. Anybody can confirm
with later editions on up of the rebates ??

Have some of both from that era.
Mitch Maxberry was my Team Captain way back when in the late 80s when I shot for the KY State High Power Team. Mitch went on to be recruited for the Palma Team for New Zealand (IIRC). He sold off all his component bullets from when he was sponsored by Lapua. He also had a case of 5K of the above 170 Rebated Boat Tails, but I only bought the “loose” boxes:( (note price on Lapuas). Also bought the 3 remaining boxes of 185 gr Lapua FMJRBTs.

A very streamlined bullet for its time.

The 162 gr Hornady 7mm (c. 1976) bullets started out as a rebated boattail. My Dad made rebated boattails in 6.5 (144) and 30 cal. He had trouble with some of the early 30's because the rebated punch was too sharp and weakened the jacket at the transition; a new punch seemed to fix the problem. I have his dies and stuff but just have not found the time to make any. The fact that I can usually buy bullets cheaper than I could make them plays a part! WH

I shot quite a few 162 Hornady boat tail and have never heard or
have seen them in a rebated configuration. They must have been
a custom push after the fact.....Note....Some of these bullets are not
a true hollow point but a FMJ with exposed lead bottom.

As noted in my images and text.

Lapua got away from the rebated boat tails, but still make a FMJ in a “Lock Base” configuration. It has been remarkably accurate in my M1A.

I stand corrected, Sir.
