It can still run down the pillars and create gaps around the top of the stock

And attempting to prevent that occurance has created even more problems in my experience.

I have used JB on hunting rifles, rails and rings. Discovered when bedding a rifle it was better to let it set up a bit before removing excess. If cleaned up immediately it later will settle a bit leaving the area between the stock and action concave a bit.

Devcon has not failed me in fifty years. Got started with it via Bob Pease. Bed with the paste n finish with a coat of liquid. Have Target rifles that u can pull out of the stock, reinstall n the zero is still there. Can’t beat that!

JB does a fine job for glue ins. For bolt ins, Pro Bed is my preference. -Al

I've found it's always best to wait until the epoxy has set up to where it's no longer tacky; the excess can then be "peeled away" cleanly instead of smearing it- which makes cleanup much harder.
