Southeast NC gunsmith needed to modify LOP

Anybody know of a good gunsmith in Southeast North Carolina to determine and adjust the length of pull on a savage 11 thumbhole? I have determined that my cousin's guns have always been to long for him. I probably could do it. I just don't want his new Savage to be my test. Plus the biggest part is determine the best LOP for him. I have read on shotguns that the distance between the nose and hand should be two fingers. Does this also apply to rifles?

A good rule of thumb is to have your trigger finger on the trigger, and the butt stock in the crook of your arm. That will be really close to the correct length of pull.....

I did have him measure this. I think it was 12 1/4". It just scares me to cut that much off. I guess i could cut once and try, then take more off if necessary. I probably should just have him try a youth gun for size. I'm thinking it needs to be around 12 1/2". That is a guess though.

It's a good idea to cut a little and then try it.
Cut more if needed is a good plan.....

That is what I was thinking. Although it is just wood, it still scares me a little that i could mess up his new gun. What about the method? Some people say band saw, and I have seen a Larry Potterfield video with a hand saw. Any preferences?

Tape the stock where the cut will be made with masking tape.This will stop splintering and I use a chop saw.

A sharp finishing blade on a 10 or 12'' miter saw will do the trick and use masking tape like Jon said above.
