sounds x rated but my throat is too deep

i bought an col gauge and modified case hoping to get close to the lands to improve accuracy problem is that my factory 223 rem sps has a throat that is so deep i can't load for it especially trying to keep under 2.26 max i am at 3.35 and see no way to load to the lands and i am stuck with a huge jump do i have any options

Over an INCH? Really?

If you're using those tools the way they were intended to be used and that 3.3 number is what your getting (modified case well short of what'd hold a bullet out far enough even to be close to the lands) you havr two options:

Have that barrel shortened a bit at the breech / threaded tenon & rechamber, or...

Buy a new barrel entirely & start over.

Out of curiosity what bullet do you intend to use with this rifle? In 223 there aren't many options to make up for the inch your throat seems to need.

pretty common for factory barrels.

Of the 2 options above, I like the rebarrel option the best. I wouldn't waste the money rechambering a factory barrel that will never be a match barrel. --Jerry

if you are using the Hornady comparator that clips on the blade of your mic it adds length to your number.

is the 2.26 a book number?

Danny,
It can be expensive. What are you trying to accomplish? If you want to have a rifle that shoots less than 1 moa, you probably already have that. You may just need better ammo. The jump isn't that big a deal until you try to get competitive. If you want to get competitive, then maybe you want to change calibers.

Are you reloading? That will actually save you money while providing high quality hand loads that will dramatically improve accuracy. If you already have dies for 223, you can sell them and buy the new caliber used and probably about break even.

If you want to go benchrest or similar shooting in the .25 moa range you might want to go with a 6mmBR or even a Dasher and You'll need a new bolt. Otherwise the cost of rebarreling is about the same. You'll pay $300 to $400 for a target barrel by a top barrel maker and something similar for a gunsmith to mount it. Do your research. Take your time. Keep shooting your 223 while you're accumulating the parts.

One option is to look for a used rem action that you can sometimes pick up for $300 or so and sell your entire rifle. that might save you a few $. Your takeoff barrel is worth $50 or less. But 223 barrels do get shot out since ammo is cheap and there may be more demand.

here is what sub .25 moa might look like.

another question is what could i get out of the take off barrel w around 300rds thru it

I sold a used stainless .223 Rem barrel for $75. You might get 50 for an SPS.

thanks for everything guys guess trying to get what i want out of factory rifle was a bad mistake i have some decisions to make now thanks again

I think you either typed your oal reading wrong in your post or took the reading incorrectly. The hornady modified case is 1.75" and even the Berger 90 vld is only 1.25". It's impossible for you to get a reading of 3.35 with that tool. Before you go buying new barrels get an accurate reading.

nice rifle carlsbad and thanks. thanks to you also savage that makes sense i will try this again sorry if i sound like a total dumd a// here just new at this maybe i need to regroup and try again

ok guys i was confused the measurement with the gauge is 2.338 which is a lot better but still long i don,t feel comfortable making my rounds that long but can i at least go 2.318 that would be 20 off the lands but is it to long everything i have read says 2.26 max

i don't care if i have to shoot single shots the magazine is not important to me

rocketron was dead on i bought a comparator at the same time and i was jumping the gun i am so sorry

That's fine if you're feeding from a magazine. Anything loaded much longer (unless you cut away a portion of the front of each magazine, near the top) won't feed reliably.

If you can load rounds that'll hold the bullet in the neck with as little as 0.063" (1/16") in the neck you'll still be fine. Loading for single-load-only allows whatever load length your rifle prefers, increases case capacity at the same time so if need be you can increase the powder charge weight - within reasonable, safe limits - which ought to buy you a little extra velocity.

Take your time, do a search here for load development practices & find out what work in your rifle with your choice of bullet(s) and propellant(s), feel free to ask questions should you come up against a problem you can't figure out a safe solution to on your own.

Keep in mind factory rifles are built to satisfy a wide range of needs while at the same time incorporating safety factors like chamber dimensions and throats cut on the generous side of approved cartridge specifications... mostly to satisfy company legal departments. You can do a lot towards getting consistent accuracy with hand loads (while at the same time going against most manufacturers recommendations) but at some point you'll find you're limited by the hardware you paid for.
