Sorting for neck thickness variation.

Just sorted 112 Remington .260 cases. After measuring again, the final talley was 53 < .001", 22 > .001" but < .0015", 25 > .0015" but less than .002" and 11 = or > .002".

If I reject everything > .0015" that's a 32% rejection rate. Don't know if that's about par but sure seems high to me.

Thoughts?

That is, unfortunately, probably pretty standard results for domestic brass. If you really want the best, buy it or make it from Lapua, and pay the price, of course.

I get similar results sorting my Remington 260 Rem brass which I have neck turned. The <=0.001 variation necks I class as good and the rest I use for practice.

The only cases I bin are the ones that for whatever reason have a higher than normal neck tension. I might get 1-4 of these out of 50 cases. I mark the cases up, carry on loading and use these rounds as foulers.

I also sort my Remington brass by weight into 1gr ranges. I now have brass from 158.9 gr to 164.5 gr. Again I have binned odd heavier cases. I have just started to specify which weight range I am using for a couple of recently developed loads.

I have lots of the Remington brass, so if a case doesn't appear to perform, I bin it. I have better brass in the cupboard, but having neck turned this Remington brass, I am keen to get the benefit of all that work.

Good luck. John

Hondo64d, If you really want to cry use a Neco Concentricity, Wall Thickness and Runout Gauge to measure your wall thickness just up from the web! Do a search here for case wall variation and their is a very good thread explaining this. As mentioned in it I use .003" TIR as a maximum and cull over 50% in LC 07, 08, and 09 .223 cases. I think there is mention that .001" at the neck starts out about .003" just up from the web. Unfortunately this effects more than just neck tension so turning doesn't alleviate all the problems. The "Expert" on this post mentions that no brand cases are immune! The most consistent in my limited findings have been WCC headstamped cases in 05, 07, and 08 with less than 1% culled. I know this isn't .260 however just wanted to let you know I feel your pain! :(

Years ago, after purchasing 100 pieces of Remington brass, I decided it was the poorest quality brass, I had ever used. I went to Lapua, and have never looked back.

Will try Lapua .260 brass eventually, but had the Remington .260 brass already, so thought I would see what I could do with it. I have used Lapua .308 brass with great satisfaction.
