In sorting bullets by measuring the length of base to ogive, what would be a reasonable tolerance?

.002" is good for me. Anything less can depend on the operator ( of the measuring device). Put a little "extra" pressure on the adjustment & it will also show a difference.
For me, some brands have a long term history of virtually no difference, so except to double check when opening a new lot, I will use them right out of the box.
Other brands that I know can be sloppy will get a more thorough inspection.

I sort using a Mark King or Buhay bearing surface comaritor, I sort in .001 lots, I also resort from base to tip length and have found my groups have even shrunk more at 1K some tip and trim but I have just been measuring oal of the bullet and sort to .0015 lots. I have quit weighing them, Jim I would appreciate it if you could copy and paste your p.m to Donovan, I have discussed this with Donovan in the past and would like to compare notes so to speak, thanks.

I don't see how common measurement methods are qualified to base bullet separation.
For one, 'Ogive' is not a place.
If you are referring to a datum on a bullet 'nose', then what is your datum & what does it specifically mean for you?
What is your datum for base/BTL?
Then, what would 1-2thou of bearing variance, once actually determined, mean for you?
Then, and this is a big then,, when measuring base to a nose datum, what part of any variance is what?

I shoot Berger bullets and have found the bullet I like with great results and will continue to use time after time. I have also found that measuring them is bacisally a waste of time. I used to sort them and after 500 out of the same box, I threw them all back in that box and shot them. I'm sure as fdshuster said, lesser bullets probably need to be measured.

As far as sorting bullets, I do use the sinclair tapered comparator inserts (one on each blade) on the digital calipers. I get more consistent and repeatable measurements this way as opposed to the base to ogive method. I am doing a comparison this weekend between my usual sort by BS and trim and point.....vs sort by BS and then sort by length (+/- .001) We will see which method prevails. I hope its the second.....because im growing tired of trimming and pointing.

That is good news I will enjoy seeing you, disregard my p.m this answered it all. I have been very busy and have not shot at all since last match so I will still be using your methods, one proven one experimental, my best group so far has been in the high 5" , you are doing much better then I but I hope to do better this weekend, I have nothing done so I will have to start sorting bullets tomorrow and load as I have to leave Fri for the match :

not much time I hope I make it?? anyway I wish you the best of luck and hope the sorting gets you in the low 4"s or better my friend, your definitely on to something and so am I, I just haven't had time to fine tune it but I will,...see ya in three days my friend

I was going to start a new thread, but decided to dig up an oldie.
I decided to hit the IBS 600 yard nats next week, so I had to break open some new bullets and do some sorting. I had gotten Two 500 count boxes (same lot #) of 108 BT 6mm Bergers last summer. I sort them by bearing serface with my Shehane tool. Anyway....I grab a handfull of bullets to find the "zero" on my dial indicator. After I sorted all 1000 bullets I had 992 the were within .00075 (.0015 total runout). I had 4 that were at + 002 and 4 that were -002.
A total of 8 that were just barley out. They would have shoot fine had i left them in the mix. Again, other than a confidence building exercise, I waisted my time.
But then again, you really can't measure confidence, now can you!!!
