Sometimes the coyote wins

I gave a coyote a lesson on feral hog dining. He was leaving after a midday meal and in quite a hurry. I guess he saw me from my front porch. So I was rushing to take the shot before he disappeared behind a big tree. I couldn't find a speck of blood and went looking for a small twig or vine shot. The follow through went right into a darned hackberry tree on the fence line 50 yards away. It's the first small tree left of the big oak.

No wonder I couldn't find any blood. It never exited. Just dislodged some of the bark. I was a little surprised in the 6mm AR with the 70 gr Sierra HPBT. Another educated yote.

Anyone who says they never miss doesn't hunt much. It happens to all of us that hunt a lot.

This summer I had a beautiful shot opportunity at a monster ground hog. He's at 238 yards, crawler in pasture field with low hay. It's a perfect profile shot, one I've made hundreds of times even off my shooting cross sticks. Well I missed - fortunately a clean miss. Never saw him again the rest of the summer.:( Still think about that miss - can't let go of it.

Later that evening I make a more difficult shot at 247 yardson a crawler with a slightly obscured profile due to higher hay in another field. Go figure?

PS: I was shooting my 223 Rem with a custom 26" Douglas Match heavy varmint barrel on a Rem 700 action. The rifle is a sub 1/4 moa rifle with my tailored reloads. Sometimes you're the pigeon and sometimes you're the stature - I was the stature on this day and got s*** on by that ghog.

I took a shot a few years ago on a deer about 60 yards away while walking through semi-thick willow brush. Was a fairly clear shot, but when I shot and nothing happened I was perplexed. Thought it was a good shot, deer ran off. I walked over to where the deer was standing, and saw 3 or 4 sheered off willows. The interesting part was it hit the first twig assuming directly in front of the deer, straight path to the next willow, third one, I could see a 30 to 40 degree deflection down to the next willow. These were about the same size as the bullet, so just bad luck. 1/4" to ether side I would have had dinner.

Took a buddy hunting once and he shot a tree dead center right in front of him, I went and cut it down later and mounted it. Presentation was in front of large crowd at a match. He was so proud of it!
