Some targets are a lot tougher

I don’t compete but I shoot a lot. I’ve been shooting the “Official Target” , the one on the left. I don’t remember where I got them and don’t know where they’re official. With my 40XRBR I’ve got it tuned to shoot 247-249. Then I saw several different targets are used by the different sanctioning groups. I assumed they were similar except for the scoring best/worst ring. I dug out the IBS target a friend gave me a few years back to compare.

Measuring the scoring 10 ring diameters, the IBS 10 ring is .507” and the “official” target 10 ring is .220”

I started with a tough target, I’ve got a hundred of them.......

One question is "What kind of rests are allowed with each target?

The other question is if the target is "best edge" or "worst edge" scoring....

My club uses the target on the right, with front and rear sandbags (no micrometer adjust rests) with "worst edge" scoring.

It sufficiently challenging for me / my gun (my scores usually run 246 - 249 with 13 - 21x)

Why the ?
The ARA card is deceptive, when it’s said and done with worst edge scoring it is pretty close to the IR target.
The biggest difference is that in ARA a bad shot won’t kill you on a card, In IR 50, if you throw one badly.....you’re toast.

Good, I’ll continue to shoot the targets I have. I’ll try some of the IR 50/50 targets- I saw the 10 ring is a smidge larger than what I’ve been shooting.

Killough has those, I’ll give em a try. That scoring is something to try. I’m interested in seeing how I score on the various targets.

That target on the left is the RBA, it was a spin-off of ir50 around 2003, that is the current target I shoot in matches here, it has no active sanctioning body. The IBS was what the unlimited class shot here, but we went back to the RBA as 750's score were too common place.

I’ve been upgrading my rifle, 2oz trigger, Harrell and bloop, decent scope, good rests and now with a case of ammo under my belt I’m getting things figured out. Sadly, I’m froze in for the season.

I really like that target, as it is good practice for ARA, I try for high X's as that would mean a guarantee 100 on a ARA. when we shot the IBS, I would try for clean shots inside the 10 ring because as you noted it is .507 the ARA 100 is .500

I’ve been shooting several centerfire bench guns trying to put all the bullets in the same hole, it’s an obsession.
But to shoot those scored targets with the rimfire bench gun is a much greater challenge. Lots of factors to be successful, a great sport.

I completely understand the obsession. I started off shooting just groups, learned somewhat how to call the condition for group shooting. but as you found out shooting for score is a different world. I got interested in shooting matches, and waited 4-years till I could shoot my rifles in a class that would allow me too, been doing it for 3 years now and have had more success than I thought I would.
I did learn the more accurate a rifle you have the easier it is to learn about shooting in conditions.

I found this chart comparison of what is needed on average groups size to obtain the highest score from each shot. the late Joe Haller from RFC had put this together. the hardest IMO is the USBR to get an X you need to blow out the little green circle, can't have any green showing.

As an FYI the RBA deal got it’s start from Bob and Rod Collins but never achieved lift off.
Guys might remember that Bob used to be a primary ELEY supplier out of GA, back before KSS. Bob was a hell of a sporter shooter.
