Solo target frame

I got my Silver Mountain Solo and thus began the frame build. SMT provides a plan but I tweeked it in size and features that anyone can do easily.

First I didn’t like the size of theirs. It’s too wide IMO because I want it to lay flat in my truck bed so I set a limit of 48”. So I basically built their exact frame except it’s narrower.

Before assembly I used my table saw to cut a 1/2” wide by 3/8” deep rabbet on each upright full length. Can be done with router too. At this time I also cut a rabbet in 2 1x4s which is the only extra material from the SMT list. A single 1x4-8’.

I then glued and screwed the frame as shown adding a 37” 1x4 at the bottom. This gave me a 37”x37” target opening for a 38”x38” piece of coroplast. The 1/2” wide rabbet on each side is why the coroplast is 1” bigger. Since I only plan to use 300 and 500 f class targets this is perfect.

For the top 1x4 I cut it a touch under 38” for some play and cut rabbets in each end to slide into the side rails over the target.

I slid in a blank piece of coroplast and my glued up face coroplast so there are 2 to stiffen it and fill rabbet.

I then set up the sensors and antenna and used plastic 3/4” wire guides to keep the cables organized.

Works great and takes seconds to change a face. I created a big X on the coroplast that will always be dead center of the target when I glue up new ones so calibration isn’t affected at all.

Just thought I’d share. Took less than 30 minutes to make once I decided on the size.

Nice job on the frame. Thanks for sharing.

I'm new to rifle and distance shooting so was not brave enough to make my frame that small. I decided to go with a 6' square target that will hang on our clubs frames. I can't haul that wide so I hinged it in the middle. It's still a challenge for my Honda Pilot with other gear.

Will try to post pictures later. Time to head for the range now. :)

Awesome Job on the frame.
Goes to show how we can get great results on these affordable systems with just a small amount of thought and care going into frame construction.

A good amount of the problems we hear about with these systems come down to lack of care in frame construction, set up and use.

You will now need to buy stock in bullets, powder and barrels as these make practice so much more productive you will shot a lot more and improve rapidly.

Huge Thanks for sharing the details on the frame construction
