Solid carbide boring bar opinions

You are working with barrels/firearms? Can you keep the SF up far enough to take advantage of the fine finishes carbides can produce? A carbide shank boring/threading bar is desirable as it is 'stiff' and resists deflection. But I find HS cutting edges to be more desirable because I have trouble staying up there at 300-350SFM (or more) on much of the work that gunsmith machining is on a manual machine.

This is a nice solid carbide boring bar. Works great for boring muzzle brakes to size. Expensive when you need to buy a 10 pack of inserts, lol. https://www.grizzly.com/products/Solid-Carbide-Mini-Boring-Bar-5mm-Shank-Right-hand/T10248

Micro 100 solid boring bars are nice too...bunch on eBay.

Ridgeway,

I bought a couple of the Micro 100 boring bars you recommended a few months back and still on the first one, the other unopened. The ThinBit is nice I used it boring a deeper hole the Micro 100 could not reach. When I bought the kit they were running a special with the inserts at almost give away price.

Circle makes a very nice solid carbide bar. I would buy something that has sharp carbide inserts.

Circle Machine was bought up by Kennametal (MSC) and is now Widia in case anybody goes looking for them. I have several of the original Circle brand in a triangle insert style that work well. They make (or made) a 1/4" bar that is great for pre-boring chambers.

There are inserts these days that work well in manual machines without the need for high surface speed. The trick is to not waste a bunch of money trying to find those inserts that perform well at the lower speeds. I can and do use hand ground tools for some things but for the most part I grab the carbide, just personal preference.

image.jpeg James the widia carbide boring bars are very nice. type F is the ones I've had the best luck with. Mike Bryant turned me on to them years ago. If you'd like I can get you a part number.
I also like the ccgt or ccmt inserts. Ive really like Mitsubishi inserts. I great finishes out of these. There for dry cutting.
