sold my 338 Lapua, What Now?

Just sold my 338 Lapua, I have a Savage 110 long action laying around ......Now What? I am not looking for a comp gun, just a fun caliber(nothing belted).

I have a 30-378 and it's pretty fun if you like that huge stuff. But if I was gonna build something on a long action for a fun caliber, I'd go with a 7rum.

I really don't want any bigger than the 338 lapua. I do have 2 6brs and love them. A friend of mine has a mile range so I am trying to decide on a "fun" caliber.

Yea I have been reading on the 284 and the high bc bullets, it seems to be one to look at. I have heard they can be a lil difficult to tune at times but I have no experience with this.

How about the 6.5x55SE? A fun accurate round, PLUS an excellent hunting round(good bullets). Available Lapua brass. I changed my Rem 700LH 338/06 to a 26/06 and then, after awhile, settled in on the Blaser R8 Professional in 6.5x55SE. Another advantage, other than reduced recoil is LONG barrel life. Most 6.5x55SEs are on long actions. They feed flawlessly from most bolt action magazines that can handle 308 family cartridges. For me this cartridge does Moose to Mice. 85gr to 160gr bullets. The only drawback is that Redding Competition die sets are not available for the 6.5x5SE.

If talking ultra long range shooting with something less than a 33 cal, here's my suggestions.

Big Power without need for muzzle break? 30-375 Ruger with 210gr Bergers. Or 7mm-375 Ruger with 180gr Bergers. The Ruger case gives you Ultramag speeds in a standard length action and less recoil. Great high power case to wildcat with.
I built the 338-375 Ruger and use 250gr Bergers, but I doubt you will want that since you just went away from a 33 cal round. I may build the 30 cal version one day...

Lower recoil, less power, but still Laser Beam trajectory? 6.5 SAUM or 6.5-300 WSM with 140gr Bergers. I personally love the 6.5 Remington Magnum, because it can match the speeds and accuracy of both the above mentioned rounds, but it has a belt which you don't want.

There's so many out there...

284 Shehane with a no turn neck, reamed for lapua brass and throated for the heavy Bergers. If you can get the RL17 to shoot, it will run the same drift and drop as a 338 LM. Half as much to reload with mild recoil. Get a set of whidden dies and you will be good to go. I built mine on a short action Savage, so I can't use the magazine, that has been my only regret. 280 or 280AI would be my second choice.

Soooo many good choices out there, I am also struggling with using the long action or short action (I have both) because of stock selection being so much better with short action but I know I probably wont be able to use the mag if I use the short. I get so confused lol....I wish I could be happy with one good gun, BUT I CANT!!!!!

From 338 Lapua to 338 Edge??? Might as well have kept the Lapua because they are about the same thing...Actually the Lapua holds all the advantages over the Edge.

Case capacity/length comparison;
338 Lapua: 114 grains H2O Case length: 2.724"
338 Edge : 110 grains H2O Case length: 2.850"

So the Edge has less capacity than the 338 Lapua, but takes up MORE magazine room? Plus there are no good brass manufacturers, like Lapua, producing 300 Ultra mag brass for the Edge. All you have is Remington and Nosler.
So someone please explain to me how the 338 Edge is a better choice than the 338 Lapua he used to have ???

I asked my 17 year old daughter and asked her what she thought on this(she shoots F class with me and loves to shoot), her reply was I LIKED THE 338 LAPUA, IT WAS FUN. So gonna build a semi custom one and have FUN! Thanks for all the replys.

WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!.... If you plan on staying with 33 cals....Id suggest building the 338 Norma. It duplicates the speeds of the Lapua, but does it in a shorter package with less recoil. Based on the Rigby case as well, thus the same bolt face, the 338 Norma is basically a "338 Lapua Short Mag". In other words, it is an improved design that is more efficient .

So now lets compare these two...

338 Lapua - Case capacity: 114gr H2O______Case length: 2.724"

338 Norma - Case capacity: 107.3gr H2O____Case length: 2.492"

So the 338 Norma nearly matches the 338 Edge in capacity, and holds an advantage over the Lapua in length. With the Norma version, a person can use a reamer with a much longer throat where the large 300gr bullets can be seated way out and still fit in a magazine. and brass can be made from 338 Lapua brass.

But here's the real kicker...by allowing bullets to be seated out farther in the Norma case, you can actually create the same exact internal case capacity as the Lapua seated with the same bullet.

So now you have everything as an advantage with the 338 Norma.
1. Shorter case length for more bullet seating options when using a magazine
2. Same quality brass options
3. Slightly less recoil and muzzle blast
4. Can be used in standard magnum length action if desired
5. And easily duplicates the speed of the 338 Lapua through efficiency and similar internal capacity

sell the Savage and Build a cannon That's cooool 8)
