Snap, Crakle, Pop??

I reload for a Shiloh 45-110 and occasionally will use AA5744 smokeless powder. Due to the relatively small volume of powder in such a large case I will put a small wad of toilet paper on top of the powder to help with consistent ignition.

Getting very good chrony numbers from this load---SD usually less than 5 and ES between 10-15--

But here is my question: When I put the toilet paper into the case, I hear an unusual noise that sounds to me like when you put milk on your bowl of Rice Krispies--you know the Snap, Crakle, Pop thing---this lasts for a few seconds and then stops???

I do use a small wooden dowel to "tamp" the TP to help insure it stays put in the case---

I am a total loss as to why or what is causing this noise???? And yes my hearing is quite good--

Any guesses out there as to what might be causing this????

Thanks--

My guess...

Powder gets pushed into the TP during ignition and it takes longer for those kernels to burn.
Probably sounds similar to some types of fireworks.

Edit:...
I misread the post. Ignore my stupid comment.

From reading his post carefully, it seems as though he is hearing the noise when he places the toilet paper into the case, not when it is fired. OP correct me if I am wrong.

Jim you are correct--as the TP makes contact with the powder and I put a small amount of pressure on it that is when I hear the noise---

I know some guys that use green florist flower foam as filler on top of the powder, works great. Cut to the right thickness, and cookie cutter it with the cartridge mouth.

on my Double Rifles and single shots I use the window sealer from Lowes. It comes in 3/8ths and 1/2" diameter, and I just cut pieces to fit flush. The bullet compresses it to a snug fit.

The Shiloh WILL shoot best with black powder period.

Why change to modern powder? Get some Swiss and it will shine!

Not true.
I bet you have very little experience loading smokeless in BPCRs.
Many people cannot get BP right now. In the future it may be even harder to acquire or will be discontinued. What are you going to do then? Continue posting about BP even though you have none to shoot?
BP advocates always want to say that BPCRs shoot best with BP because they were designed for BP. That is silly logic. The .22LR is older than BPCRs and Shilohs and all Sharps. The .22 LR was designed to shoot BP. Everyone knows that the .22 LR shoots best with smokeless. Show me anyone seriously competing in anything with .22LR using BP as the propellant.
And everyone knows that BP craps in its own nest by producing excessive fouling that the enthusiasts try to control with wiping, blow tubes and other inane techniques.

Tell us how you really feel...

Actually, Mr. Ireload2 I will take your bet.

I spent almost four years experimenting with loads for my Shiloh LRE in .45-2-7/8 and 45/70.

During that time, I tried multiple smokeless powders, BP substitutes and 3 brands of black powder.

I also consulted BPCR world record holders for advice.

My final load was 105 grains of Swiss 1-1/2f compressed with a unique wad column and 540 grain paper patched Bullet. This load was around 1410 fps and by far the most accurate load I found.

The comparison of a 45-110 sharps to a .22 is irrelevant and demonstrates your lack of experience with the Sharps rifle.

Your concern about availability of bp is an argument that is over a century old.

Your choice of chamber IS NOT one that adapts well to smokeless and should have been a consideration when you bought it.

I'm done with this thread, and your insinuation about my experience.

I would suggest you contact Shiloh for their advice. Or perhaps, you feel they have little experience with this subject as well.
