smooth barrel nut

I just purchased a Savage model 12 FCV barreled action. It has the smooth barrel nut. What is the best way to remove this?

Good shooting,
Gene

Call Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply. He is very knowledgeable about Savage rifles. His number is 763-682-4296.

I just scanned the Savage Shooters Forum. Here is their advice:

"The quickest and easiest way to remove a smooth barrel nut from the factory is to use a pipe wrench and replace it with a slotted or smooth nut. With all the blasting grit and bluing salts they are tough to break loose the first time"

Here is another comment on the problem:

"I have done three smooth barrel nuts. One on a lightweight hunter and two on Axis rifles. All of them took a pipe wrench to get it done. Bad news is that on two of the three the barrel broke free but the nut would not budge....I tried everything from soaking in Kroil to heating but nothing worked. they had to be cut with a Dremel tool. Once I got the two nuts off you could see the problem. The blueing salts were like a fine grit in the threads. The barrel might as well have been glued on! "

Hi Cort,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have removed many factory barrels with the slotted barrel nuts without any problems. Most of my barrels have come from Jim Briggs. This is my first smooth barrel nut. It looks a pipe wrench will probably work. Thanks.

Good shooting,

I've only removed one smooth nut, but it came off without any trouble.

I put the barreled action in my barrel vice and used a rear-entry action wrench to
unscrew the action away from the nut. Once the action was off, the barrel nut
came off by hand. No problem & replaced it with the slotted nut on the new barrel.

Have removed several Savages and a couple Mossbergs with no trouble or damage to either the barrel or nut. Make a wrench similar to an Albrecht chuck wrench, clamp it on tight and unscrew the nut.

Lose the pipe wrench.

I was thinking a pipe wrench would be just the thing for working on a savage! you may also need a 3 lb hammer. I took a barrel off of a mauser action once and could not get a barrel vice to hold it, it was so tight. Welded it to an insert to a receiver hitch and installed in the truck and put a pipe on the action wrench handle. It was 75 years old though.

Gene, pipe wrench then toss the nut and put a slotted one on there. I use a 4 lb. deadblow hammer, works well. ;)
