Small Caliber Fun in the Rat Patch

A short video clip a friend and I put together from a rat outing recently I thought you all would enjoy. It proves beyond doubt that ground squirrels, despite their name, CAN indeed fly! ;)

The "ring" heard at the shot, is from concussion of the discharge near an aluminum irrigation pipe wheel line that was about 5 yards in front of the muzzle.

Of course, it helps flight characteristics when the flight is induced via a 204, 20VT, or even as in this case, a little 221Fireball.........

Paul, PM sent.

Seeing as this little video clip was quite popular here and elsewhere, I guess we'll have to do some more of Skippy and his grand flying adventures in the sky.

Time to load up some more 20VT......

Nice video.. what range was "Skippy?"

The particular squirrel in the video clip was a close one to capture the image.....right about 65 yards. We were shooting them out to just shy of 350 that day, but most were too far out to get any decent video of the flights. ;)

Well done video!! It's interesting that the camera frame was "right" centered.. Same direction of flight of poor little Skippy.. We should import a breeding pair of those ground squirrels to SC....

Thanks for the encouragement, not that any is really needed. ;)

As for importing a pair, I'm absolutely certain that virtually ALL the alfalfa farmers here would gladly help you out in that regard! My primary ranch I shoot reports monetary crop loss at just over $200K per year from the little munchers.

i killed 509 of them out of 240 acres last year. while they are not very big, that many animals eating all day every day adds up.

i wish i could get out and shoot some rodents, we still have 1.5 feet of snow on the pasture!
