Sly as a Fox

I've got this sly red fox here at the ranch that has been playing the mayhem guy from TV for several months now. The first time I witnessed the skills of this guy, it was simply amazing.

The wife an I were sitting on the back porch when he came from the chicken coop with a chicken half his size, gripped in his teeth. My wife said "look at that coyote" I looked up and said that's a fox. He ran very quickly north to the corner of a loafing pen about fifty yards from the coop, dug a hole his full body length in what seemed like ten seconds, then stuffed that chicken into the hole. I hurried inside, grabbed my 6.5x47 and set it up on the corner rail to try to get a shot at him. By the time I set up, he had already ran back to the chicken coop and snagged another one. He repeated the same procedure three more times using a different spot to burry the chickens each time. Man was this guy fast! With two fences, a riding arena, Magnolia tree and about 150 yards between the two of us, I just couldn't get him in my crosshairs. He visited the coop for the fifth time, grabbed the fifth chicken, then ran south over a ridge and no doubt feasted on the fruits of his labor somewhere far away. All this took place in about five minutes.

A little while later, the wife and I took a ride in the Ez-Go to take a look. Sure enough, there was a chicken stuffed deep in each hole, far enough so the buzzards couldn't find them. We decided to leave them in there, knowing that the fox would be back later to get them. This strategy may just save a few more chickens.

I have seen him three more times since then and each time, unable to get a good shot off. The last was this morning, 300 yards out running left to right across the back pastures. By the time I got my rifle, he was 450 yards out and still running. I took a shot hoping to get lucky. Well needless to say, I was not successful or there would be a nice picture accompanying this post.

Some may say, why don't you just put out a trap? Well I could but we have small dogs and besides, I do admire the skill and cunning of this sly little fox and will make this the fare kill that he deserves. I call it he but in actuality, it's probably a female as I have read that the males usually don't kill more than they can eat at one time.

Great story.
Have to throw out my fox sighting yesterday-I live in fox hunting land in Virginia.
My wife has spent thousands-far, far, outspending me on gun stuff, with her horses and association with several Fox Hunting Clubs here, so I have an intimate knowledge and love-hate relationship with Mr. Brushy. Anyway, I digress.
Yesterday I was rounding up 2 of the horses and bringing them up to the barn for the farrier. One did not have his halter so I grabbed baling twine and fashioned one-leading them up along with out two Jack Russell Terrorists who delight in tormenting horses.
Then I hear the Huntsman horn and the bay of hounds-nearby! Like close across the road.
I look up-see the fox 50 yards ahead of the pack going like a bat out of hell-now, being hunt horses, mine start to spin, buck and go stupid. Here I am attached to two horses, one with bailing twine, trying not to get pummeled into the dirt by a total of 2800 # of horseflesh-one is a 1500# draft cross and one a big thoroughbred.
All along with the two dogs heading for the commotion.
I managed to drag the horses into the stalls just in time, slam the doors shut, scream loud enough to stop the dogs before they get mixed up with 30 foxhounds- if you know Jacks you know they are stupid enough to go after any sized anything for most any reason. Then I got to appreciate the fox who doubled back on the pack, stopped, re-assessed his situation and calmly ducked under a fence while the pack circled noisily 200 yards away absolutely sure there was a fox in their midst.
You got to admire his composure under extreme duress-30 big nasty dogs trying to run you down to tear you limb from limb and you get far enough ahead to stop look around and get lost.

Yeah, I got shoes on the horses too.

I would fix the hole in the chicken coop.
Chicken coop is open during the day and the chickens are free roaming. At least the ones not in the holes are free roaming. Lock em up in the coop at night. The ones that venture too far out in the evenings have to find a hiding spot for the night or the owls get um. If you are a chicken, everything is out to eat you.

Find the biggest goose you can and put him in the chiken pen, set back and watch the show, you could even sell tickets to the event. The goose will kick the foxes ass clear to Mexico. a 6 lb fox can not compete with a 20 lb goose. I have seen a Canadian goose take on a thirty lb dog and the dog now gives the geese a 50 yard leaven alone.

I never thought of that. This batch of chickens were raised in small cages before I got them. Half of them, when scared, just drop to the ground and sit there. Not much of a challenge for any predator from the ground or the air. You have to push them out of the way with your foot to keep from stepping on them.

Swapped out the feeder cam chip yesterday and looked at the pics. I have several shots in the past months of a fox under the feeder but this time I got lucky, there are two of them. Here is the pic and a few others of the critters around here. The piggies are from several months earlier when the feeder was at a different location.

Those are really healthy looking fox, no mange or bare spots, must be the diet. Chicken will do that for you. ;) ;) Get the meanest goose you can find.

The coyotes look good around here too. No mange on any that I have taken. My cows keep saying it too: EAT MORE CHICKEN!

By any chance were these chickens raised by a liberal before you got them? ::)

Hmmmmm, let me think about this; I give them a ton of feed and they always want more and come running no matter what i am doing thinking I have more. They go anywhere and everywhere they want regardless of the rules. They don't seem to understand anything I ask of them. They get into and seem to take over everything that's not locked up. Well Randy, I think... Oh wait, I do get some eggs from them. Man that was close. For a second I thought I was gonna have to run them out of the house. ;D

Well one down, one to go. My son Jon shot one of the fox yesterday evening at 297 yards laying in the middle of the south west pasture. He didn't think he hit it as it ran off behind a loafing shed out of his view and he assumed it ran into the woods north. This morning the buzzards were flying and had already destroyed it. It was about 20 yards from where he hit it straight through the shoulders with his 243. Good eye and good shooting son. That's one up on me! :)

Man, a fox ran off after getting hit by a 243? Maybe one of those mean geese wouldn't stand a chance with that tough little bastard.

Snake, Those are gray foxes under your feeder, they always that black strip running down the full length of their tail with a black tip. Our lease which is located 16 miles south of San Saba is covered up with them. I've taken several over the year I had these mounted. I called in the pair one evening just before dark out of a deer stand, the male came in not tem minutes behind the female looking for his mate. I actually witnessed three tom turkeys run a pair of foxes out of a feeder once.
