Slugging a barel

Another site suggested that I post this question here. That is... a few years back I read an atricle in Precission Shooting buy a guy that made a "killer" 22 target rifle. In the article he mentioned how slugging a barrel was the best way to find and use the "sweet spot". So my question is, What exactly am I looking for. I know that the muzzle end should be tighter than the breach end and smoothness is very important but is there something else? I would suppose that getting the "feel" takes a little practice. Should I be looking for something else? The blank is 25" long and I'm looking for an 18" barrel.

I have been using Eley Match EPS bullets as my slugs. Talk about painful !! Those bullets are almost too expensive to shoot so it really hurts to use them as slugs.

You just have to push a lot of slugs down bbls to develop a feel for what is going on.

What blank are you using ? For about $100 Numrich has some Anschutz Match bbl blanks. You have to get the OD turned but for a bbl less than 19" I consider them an unbeatable value.

Is the Numrich blank a stainless? Are they listed on the Gun Parts site? I was going w/ a Greenmountain SS from Brownell's for $101. It's 1.062" on the OD and I'm going to leave it fat, spin it up on the 240 grit wheel just to get it smooth and looking nice. I really wanted to get a Lilja or Krieger but after trying to come up w/ the $$$ all this past summer and bullets $30/box and primers just as high I'm going the cheep route just to get it going.

Why are you using Eley EPS for slugs?

I have a borescope and have looked at all the top name bbls and the Anschutz blank that Numrich sells is just as smooth as any of them. It also has choke which I don't think the GM bbl will have. The only real problem with this bbl is that it is 1.25" straight cylinder and it's less than 20" long.

I have used one without turning it but I didn't have the muzzle in the correct place in relation to the choke and therefore the bbl never shot to it's potential. If you get one and turn it don't leave a larger dia shoulder, make it all one diameter or you will have a bore constriction at the shoulder.

They are not stainless. I keep mine slathered with oil inside and out.
