Slo-Mo Videos .308 TTSX impact tests

I have tested a lot of Barnes TTSX in .35 whelen and small amount in .308 with TTSX 168 grain. Just acquired some 130 grain TTSX for long distance comparisons with other brands.

I was surprised with penetration of 130 TTSX due to 3200fps verses 2730fps with the 168 grain. There was quite a difference in impact explosion between the two. The 130 penetrated into 7th. jug. The 168 penetrated into 4th. jug.

I thought initial impact was close but it seemed like the smaller bullet went farther and impacted harder, farther in. Nice video and test. Matt

Thanks for sharing.... great recovery pictures and video's !.!.!

I'd be curious to see the penetration difference at near equal velocities (at the target), since velocity has so much effect on bullet expansion.

All I can say is that the 168 TSX (non-tipped) in an '06 ran the length of a cow elk (in at the right shoulder - just under the hide in the left buttock) at 275 yds.. My brother took a bull at 380 yds. through and through both shoulders with another '06. Macerated both lungs and heart. We have been using them for years with great success. I have a 300 Weatherby as well and will be using the 165 gr. TTSX (12" twist will not stabilize the 168s). Seems the 130s would shed an awful lot of velocity at extended range, wouldn't you say?

One thing for sure the 130 shoots extremely flat. All slugs we have tested penetrate much more at slower velocities replicating 300-400 yard shots.

Notice numbers: The 130 grainer starting out at much faster speed gives it speed advantage all the way out to 500 yards. Energy advantage to nearly 200 yards but this is where weight of 168 holds up better in longer ranges. I am not convinced the 168 is truly the better long range slug. The difference is not that great.

I don't call it long-range till it gets out past 1000. A lot of shooting we do is farther. They don't have the sectional density for that. I believe it would make a great hunting bullet for 400 yards or so. It was a great video and nice to see you do the work involved. Matt

I tried the 130 TTXXX in a 1:12 308 and could not get them to shoot well. I loaded the 150 TTXXX with much better results. In my 20" model 7 they shoot sub .5 moa. At 100 yds. Have shot deer with them from 30 yds to 410. The only non pass through was from front to back at 80 yds. Bullet mushroomed just like it was supposed to. Retained 95%_ of its weight. Was recovered under the skin on the far ham.Deer dropped in its tracks.I like a large wound channel an exit wound.

I have shot 8 different powders before I found the best powder for my gun and 168 grain slugs.

The Barnes X family off bullets kill water jugs better than any other bullet I have ever tested. Not necessarily on on game.

Ill never shoot another animal with one. Ive used em from newfoundland to namibia for 5 yrs killing everything from coyotes to moose. Worst performing bullet ever made. I was in denial for a very long time because of pictures and videos like these

My 9 year old Grand Daughter killed a water buff with one shot using 308 168 GR tsx
Her picture and write up is on barns youth archives .

I am surprised it took you five years. Examples of where they failed you???

Big long thread in the hunting forum. No shock was the main thing. They killed everything i shot i just had to go find alot of em with no blood trails and a deer not bleeding in an arkansas thicket or a bear in an alder patch on your knees crawling that may or may not be dead finally got me.

Here is large Western NC buck I shot that entire body and lowered head was facing me. I shot him with 243 with 80 grain TSX. Slug struck him high in neck between shoulder blades and passed over four feet of entire body. When I got to him absolutely no blood on ground. Bullet was seen thru skin at his boy parts in skin. His heart pumped one time after striking him. I could not expect better results.
