Slapping the HOG at 500 yards with a 284 Winchester.

I participate in 100 300 500 yard woodchuck shoots and have a new 284 Winchester with a Krieger 1-9 twist barrel. I have not shot bullet # 1 through this new lazer rocket. I think the bullets of choice will be either Berger 168 grainers, 180 grain Bergers or the 168 Sierra MatchKings. I am inclined to believe that Reloader 17, Relaoder 19 or H4831SC might give me the best velocities (especially after reading Mr. Ballard's article). Are there any pet loads out there that have proved to be exceptionally accurate for you? I would like to find a good starting point and am thinking that about 50 grains of RL 17 would be a start?? Also, bullet length appears to be right at about 3.102 plus or minus .002. Any advice is most appreciated.

Don't forget to try the 162 Hornady A-Max in your .284, you just might like it...
RL-17 is a good powder to try, along with H-4831, one of those 2 will keep you happy.

I just got done shooting my 284 with 175 SMK's over the chrono about an hour and a half ago.

At 53 grains with this sucker was not pleasant on the shoulder, I did not see preassure signs excpet for slight flattening of primer pockets at 52.5 and 53 grains and the bolt had slight stickiness with the 53 grainers. I am good with my 52 grain results and sticking with that. I had decent accuract for the make shift bench. Going to be shooting F-Class tomorrow and will let you know how the 52 grain loads work at 600.

I have also had phenominal results with the 162 A-Maxs when it was 35 degrees outside didnt see pressure signs until 54 grains of RE-17 at that temp they were around 3125... I feel comfortable with the 51-52.5 Grain range. Everything I want out of this rifle. If I want more Ill do a 7mm WSM or 7mm Mag

Gotta love the mauser actions. I dont have any way to measure pressure expect for looknig at the brass so take my loads with a grain of caution and work up your loads carefully.

I've got a little Yugo Mauser that I threaded a Mcgowen 1-9 twist barrel on @ 26" long, I set the chamber where COL of 3.100" was .010 off the land with the 162 A-Max using Hybrid100V with a 55gr. charge I get 3010fps any higher in the poder charge and the groups go to pots! this is my hunting rifle it's by no means a bench gun or anything to do with comps. I shot several deer last year and I will tell you the 162 A-Max does some massive damage! POI you can call a 10-12" circle around blood shot meat but it is like hitting them with a BIG hammer!

Once I get my 308 lined out I'm going to play with the RL-17 and see if I can get any accuracy benifits and possibly use less powder. I think you would like the effects a 162 A-Max has on things from paper to critters.

Be safe! these loads function fine in my rifle but yours may not like them, back off a tad! Later,

Kirk
