skirted .30 bullet

Has anyone ever seen a skirted 30 cal 150 FMJ bullet, or know where they come from ??
By "skirted" I mean that the base of the bullet is recessed about .010 from the end of the bullet ??
::) really weird ::)

The Remington 50 gr PLHP 223 bullets are made this way. They shot fairly good out of a Remington SPS varmint I had.

The skirt effectively moves the center of mass forwards in the bullet, and acts to drag stabilize the bullet, like fins on a dart.

Unfortunately, the increased drag is usually a greater negative than the increased stability - the spin of the bullet will keep it stable out to the transonic velocity range without needing a skirt, so adding the skirt means you hit that transonic speed sooner, though with more stability it might survive the transonic shock better, and be less inclined to tumble as it passes through the shock.
