SK Pistol Match Special

I have been doing some testing here at Lee Gardner Precision with a few different barrel makers, using different chamber reamers and such. I cant go into great detail about the testing I'm doing here at my shop just yet but i can share one thing.
I have gotten my hands on some SK pistol Match special and i am blown away with the consistency and accuracy. Across the board this 7$ a box ammo has been at the top or very near the top for accuracy and velocity consistency for every barrel and chamber combo i have machined . Now i will add, i only have one lot of this ammo so i am curious as to what some of you all might be seeing? I understand that this is a new offering from SK and i cant seem to find any more available for sale. I would gladly buy some if someone had any to part with but more importantly, i am curious to see what the rest of you think of this ammo? Did i get a lucky batch, or is this stuff actually Special. LOL Im guessing its gonna be a solid ammo but that my next lots are going to be a bit of a let down, Pretty common occurrence in this game. Anyway share what you know. I appreciate the info.

Pics please of these groups or testing you've done. You must have gotten the magic pixie dust lot # as what I've shot is good ammo, but it's not gonna win any matches. I've shot some good groups with it but it still has more of those pesky flyers than CX.

Every once in awhile you get lucky. I had some SK rifle match ammo (old gold box) that shot better than anything I've ever tried since. Tested out to 400 yards! Ive gotten mine lot tested at Lapua and got close, but no bueno.

SK pistol match at 50 yards is a big secret in the 22LR BR world. Well, maybe not now. I have some SK standard in the gold box and it shoots well at 50 & 100 yards.

I’ve had some good bricks of Pistol Match. I got a few bricks recently that are better than the last ones I got. Still not as good as a good lot of Rifle Match, but the few times I’ve tried Pistol Match Special I wasn’t impressed.

There's no special quality to SK Pistol Match. If it shoots well, it's a good lot. But it's not different from other SK .22LR ammo. It's not made differently.

SK grades it's round nose 40 grain .22LR ammo into two lines. One is nominally rated at 1073 fps, the other at 1106 fps. (Of course MV will vary between lots and rifles.) The top-graded products are SK Rifle Match for the 1073 line, SK Long Range Match for the other. SK Pistol

SK Pistol Match is a variety or grade of the 1073 fps ammo. On the literature it will list it at a slower MV because it's tested in shorter, pistol length barrels.

If you haven't tried it, I suggest Pistol King this past Sunday's match first time shooting it, 250-21X with a 248-19X on the next target. this was shot in some strange conditions left to right, but my hold was at 4-5 o'clock?

the OP is talking about Pistol Match Special.. not Pistol Match.. there is a difference

Thanks DOC. My mistake. I'll amend my remarks to correct the error but note that the only difference is that the MV of SK Pistol Match Special is higher than SK Pistol Match.

I would say there is no special grade or quality of any ammo regardless of what the box says. the best is what shoots in the rifle. after trying Pistol King I am 100% convinced you need to try everything out there.

I have shot a lot of pistol match special. Yes it can shoot very well but it also can shoot just average. I have a current lot of Std+ that hammers. Have shot some regular pistol match that shoots great (especially at 50). Have had good and bad lots of CtrX. Im convinced at this point there is no magic in the box wrapper and you just need to shoot different lots to figure things out and cross your fingers.
As stated above the velocity is higher and its possible the barrel harmonics are favoring the extra speed.
Rimfire is quite a smoke and mirrors mess. I have cut shilen, benchmark, bartlein, wilson, kreiger and cheap 89$ green mountains. I have had the cheap barrels outshoot the 350$ barrels.
I have my own personal ideas on what makes a rimfire shine and it is simply good machining and longer barrels. You must have bullet engagement and I feel this is as much for consistent SDs as anything. In the end I have seen factory guns that can shoot with some of the hummer barrels I have put together. Crazy stuff.
Additionally I have had a large number of people tell me their guns shoot "one hole" or half inch groups at 100 yards but have yet to see anybody prove it with repeatable results. Same guys usually tell me they shoot under 2" at 200. These are precision rifle guys running bipods and rear bags btw.
I have toyed with the idea of hosting a bench type, winner take all, agregate paper match but I'm not sure I want to deal with all the sad faces. lol

I don't do benchrest but I will tell you my gold standard thus far. If I put a gun together that shoots multiple 10 shot groups at 100 that will agg under 1.25" in good field conditions with a bipod and rear bag I am well satisfied. I can shoot 5 shot groups and agg much smaller but I don't feel like that is the best representation of real world accuracy.

I wish one of the major manufacturers would produce a premium and shorten a case down between a short and a lr length then load it with a 50gr bullet. Better case fill and better ballistics. I think the SD would drop but perhaps I am wrong... not uncommom. It would require a faster twist so it's not for everyone but many of us would give it a go.

Interesting note when I was getting my RimX tested in Messa. Devan saw a trend in my particular rig. It seemed to like the lots that were higher velocity. Not much, but definitely there. I ended up with a lot of Biathlon X which runs faster than Midas or CenterX.

I do have a couple of bricks left from a case, but have relegated it only to target pistols. I'll run some of this through my CZ 457 MTR, to see what it will do:

Not denoted as *SPECIAL*, so that may make a difference, besides the packaging envelope. Looking at SAAMI specifications they do allow for a +/- 90 FPS velocity tolerance.

Nevertheless, ammo makers grade the ammo they produce. While price doesn't determine how an ammo will shoot, the grades of ammo are generally priced according to their position on the grade they're given. Of course, some lots of lesser grades may shoot better than some lots of better grades.
