Size & Shape of Steel targets?

I have a 1" slab of steel 21"x36". Any ideas on sizes and or shapes I should cut out for plinking out to 450? I also have a 15" square piece and two that are about 6" square any ideas on what I could do with them? Also, how should I hang them? I do have access to a welder and plenty of scrap steel. Thanks :)

our club has round gongs at 565yd and 1000yd. They are 5'' and 8''.
The 5'' at 565 is too easy on calm days. If you are shooting closer yet, i'd size them .5-.75 moa. Of course this assumes your shooting a very accurace rifle. For a hunting rifle I'd go 1.5 moa.

Here's a frame made from 1/2" black pipe and 1/2" rebar. I have since changed out the U-bolts & pipe for 1"x5"x1/8" steel straps bent into a U shape for hanging the steel from the rebar. I live in a motorhome so everything has to disassemble for storage/transport.

Hey Nomad47,
Great minds think alike :) We made the same target holder. Two years ago I asked Dalton if he wanted to shoot my Encore rifle at the steel plate @ 306 yds.. This boy lives to shoot and shot a good group for shooting a strange rifle to him. Barrel is 17 inches long chambered in 257 JDJ.

I've welded up a few of these over the last year with 1.5" angle. If you've got a decent amount of scrap iron and a chop saw, you can hammer these out pretty quick. This one took me several hours but I was doing all of the cutting with an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel, and everything was perfectly measured and square etc. The last one I made I cut up with a chop saw and was done with the whole thing end to end in less than an hour. I looked at iron pipe at the local HW store, and it was going to cost more in pipe, elbows & fittings than it would for me to just go buy the angle and weld it up.

Agreed that angle iron is considerably cheaper than iron pipe and fittings. But in my case I needed something that I could disassemble and store in my motorhome.
I also considered angle and bolts, but decided that would take more time to assemble along with more parts to keep track of.

Indeed. When my buddy and I plotted all of this out, we went back and forth on a "take-down" stand setup. Fortunately, for now, we just haven't needed one. We were able to haul it to where we needed to go and leave it there. If I had to make it into a take-down, I'd probably employ pipe AND angle, or something similar. Hard to say... I'll have to ponder that one more. :)

I love shooting steel! Its so much more fun than just paper. I found a company that sell great quality AR500 targets of different types for the best prices I could find anywhere. If you use this link you will get an extra $10 off the order when you register!
Also... use the code "slickguns" and get an additional %15 off your HIGHEST price item... yes highest!
The link is https://shootingtargets7.com/store/?___store=default&ref=YjU2RlUyNjFXcVk9

Check them out. You will probably be impressed like I was.

I welded up a stand with oil feild sucker rod. 6ft tall 4 ft wide. I have a big life size AR500 3/4 inch human sillahuette target on it for shooting long range and extended long range.

If do 1 inch per 100 yards for round gongs. Ive found hanging by two chains best for me.

If its not AR500 steel it will ding up and crater fairly fast. Ballistic tip bullets tear up steel from what ive seen too... i dont personally use them though.
