silouette shooting at mid range

Hey guys. Do most guys shoot medium BC bullets, like400-450 bc for medium range targets? like
out to 500 yards. then switch to 500-600 bc for the rams??? past 500 yds?? I read a old article that said basically Wherever a bullet hits its maximum stability, that's where it is most accurate, So determine what range that is and shoot that bullet at that range.. Get it??? guess it
makes sense to me>>>>

When I shot high power silhouette in the 260 rem. I used the 107 SMK for the chicken pigs turkeys and 142 SMK for the rams, in the 7br I used the 130 SMK for the c,p,t and the 168 SMK for the rams. Both worked very well but I liked the 260 loads best.

Generally people use heavy bullets for rams, because you need extra energy for marginal hits. For the others, there's no need to pay for the generally more expensive big bullets, or put up with the extra recoil. When I used to shoot IHMSA with a Contender in .35 Remington, I used the Sierra 160 gr. FMJ loaded backwards (!) for the pigs and rams, a 180 gr. FMJ for turkeys (just for the slightly better BC), and a Hornady 200 gr. spire point stoked up to 2200 fps for rams. The recoil on that one would shake your fillings loose (it kept shearing the screws on my Lyman globe front sight), but the rams would drop like they were dynamited.

I used to shoot both rifle and handgun silhouette and the only reason I ever knew that shooters went to heavy bullets on the rams were for knock down power. Know range and sighters before the match, difference in BC was negligible.

I'm mostly an IHMSA shooter but have shot high power rifle a bit, 260 with 107/142 SMK. There's a fatigue factor in silhouette shooting. Recoil wears you out over the course of the day and most shooters try to stay near the minimum needed to reliably knock over targets.

I'm out of the loop when it comes to rifle silhouette but it seems like a lot of the "high BC" conversation I've heard revolved around the use of minimalist cartridges. So like for example, a 260 has plenty of power to knock over rams with a wider range of heavy bullets. A 6.5 TCU is a lot smaller so a shooter would need the very highest BC bullets to maintain enough energy to take rams. The cartridges they're using may be different but that's the idea.

I'm building a 6.5x47L currently, I'm planning on 123 for the CPT and Sierra 142s for the rams. Wind is almost always an issue, so high BC bullets are a must, just have to balance it with recoil
