Sightron vs Vortex

Don't know a thing about Vortex.

But, I bought an old Sightron S-II 6-24 scope for my entrance to long range Bench rest off ebay.
The parallax seemed to not coincide with the focus setting. Sent the scope back to Sightron. Bear in mind I am not the original owner of this scope and it was of unknown age. I got the scope back from Sightron in less than 2 weeks and it worked like new!

I have since bought a Night-Force bench rest scope for my 6BRX long range BR gun and recently a Sightron S-III 10-50 for my 284 WIN long range BR/F Class. I prefer the Sightron S-III over the N-F.
Incidentally, when I built the 284 WIN, I didn't have the S-III yet so I mounted the old S-II 6-24 on the new gun. I was amazed how good this scope is! I will NOT get rid of the S-II!

However, I was extremely pleased with the warranty response of Sightron concerning my old used scope.

That's good to hear .. Always nice to hear about companies that have great customer service. Puts me a little more at ease knowing if something happens they will take care of it

has anyone had any experience with the ffp reticle? just wondering if its clumsily thick at 24x?

I have 3 of them in the 6 x 24 XLR reticle FFP and am very pleased for the most part. If you go on Vortex's site you can see the subtensions of all their reticles which will show you how thick the cross hairs are.

I have to say Rtheurer hit it right on the head! we had 4 4x16 vortex scopes that were not clear at 1000yds and with very little shooting they started to get fuzzy on the edges. we sent them back and no problem with warranty. problem is I like to shoot not keep mounting scopes. I got a sightron lll and it was so good that I got 3 more and have 2 more on order. I just love there MOA retitcle. we shoot out to 1500yds and they are super clear.

I haven't seen many out there .. I think people just figure spending that money they end up with more of a well known scope .. Hard for someone to be the first to try something on the higher end ?

It is often hard to compare scopes (apples to apples). I had a customer send me the top of the line Vortex scope to mount on his 6.5 creedmoor. I put the Vortex scope on a columnator and tested it for alignment, tracking, and reflective light. It was very clear, tracked true, did not have the advertised windage, and when looking at the inside of the scope there was swarf stuck to the interior. I shot the same rifle with a 10 x 50 x 63 SII Sightron. It was clear, bright, tracked well and had more windage and elevation than advertised.

The biggest difference that I noted was the weight. I think the vortex (heavier) was much more durable than the Sightron (lighter).

The Vortex model scope sells for about twice what the Sightron 10 x 50 x 63 cost.

If you have any questions about Sightron I would direct you to Allen Orr, at Sightron. He knows their products about as well as anybody.

i agree with rustystud, its often hard to compare things when there are differences between the two, to which will always cause some people to like one and not the other. so in the end it generally comes down to what is considered affordable to the person and for the task it is needed for. For instance, my wife shoots a .223 when we go out shooting, the gun has a 150 dollar scope on it that i got used from a buddy for 75. she only shoots 1-400 yards, and some days with that scope she does considerably better than i do, i offered to get her a better optic but she says she can see through it, its easy for her to use, and she can out shoot me with it some days so it makes her happy haha. The one thing i have leaned about optics is everyone will have there own opinion, and none are wrong. as long as you like it and enjoy using it than its a win.
