Any idea the purpose of this modification? Maybe to lock the adjustment in one direction? Maybe some sort of adjustment stop?

Is this scope ruined?

Back in the day, the late Ron Hoehn did that modification on a lot of Sightron 36s. If I remember correctly, one year the entire US Worlds Benchrest Championship shot those scopes.

You back off those screws when making an adjustment, and then lightly snug them against the erector tube when you are done, so that the adjustment is locked.

It was about that time that shooters discovered that scopes points of impact could shift, from shot to shot, by very small amounts that might not be noticed in a hunting or regular range/varmint situation, but which would definitely make a difference in benchrest.

This eventually resulted in some scopes being locked up mechanically so that they were centered, and used with externally adjustable mounts. Bob Brackney, Arnold Jewel, and Gene Buckys sold them, and did the scope work. If you use the scope correctly, it should perform as designed.
