Sightron 10-50x60 for long range

I'm starting to shoot larger steel targets beyond 1000 yards, and would like a little more glass than the current 20x I am using. A friend has a SIII 10-50X60 that he is selling.

It has the fine crosshair reticle and I didn't know if that would be less optimal than say a Mil or MOA hash reticle at those longer ranges, for wind holds, etc.

Could the scope be sent back for a reticle upgrade if needed?

I have the same scope with Mil-Hash reticle and it is fantastic. Only issue is remembering to return power to 24X for true reticle reference, because it is SFP. Best to shoot at 24X to avoid confusion, which is plenty of magnification, and use the 50x for spotting bullet impacts. Lower power also minimizes mirage.
You basically have a target scope and spotting scope in one. Focus is not quite as sharp above 45x, but that's a small price pay for the utility.
I definitely recommend changing to a hash reticle for hold over/off.

Depends on your eye's and how they handle light and or the lack of light.

I have a Sightron from their first or second year in business and it is a fine cross hair with target dot. In good light it is great. When the sky turns overcast though so blue skys not grey skys but cloudy that fine cross hair and fine dot can become invisble on the range. In my 30's that was not an issue but at 50 it is a real issue for me. The scope is awesome great glass, coatings, tracking made in Japan fantastic.

I have scopes both better and worse in terms of glass and coatings that are much easier for me to use that are not fine cross hairs and fine dot. The quality of the glass, coatings, tracking etc... does not matter much if you can not see the reticle. It is just too fine for me at 50.

I recomend you ask your friend if you can check it out on a bright day and an over cast day and actualy try to see a specific target at range. The fine cross hair is a love hate polarizing reticle you either love it or you absolutely hate it!

With a tiny bit of simple math, the MOA-2 reticle subtends correctly at 12, 24, and 48x. That about covers any shooting situation a 10-50 is good for.
But the FCH reticle isn't ideal for LR shooting, but it can work.

IMO, it would need to be a smoking deal to buy it and have reticles swapped. Have you called Sightron to ask them if they's do it, price, etc?

Another thing to consider is elevation adjustment. When you get "beyond 1,000" you may need more than the 50MOA that scope offers - especially if you want to maintain a zero at some reasonable range. 1/8 MOA clicks and 10 MOA per rev aren't ideal, either (if that's what the scope in question has). Again, just my opinions.
