THIS APPEARS LIKE PUTTING 10 LBS OF GROCERIES IN A 5 LB BAG !!!!!!!!!View attachment 996318 What are the thoughts out there on Sierra's new 197gr Match King for the 284, looks pretty sweet. Just wondering if anyone has had the chance to shoot it out of a straight 284! Too big, too slow or do you need something a little more to push it?
Just what the 28 Nosler has been waiting for, 284 case capacity may be a little light for that bullet.
I think Joe is right with this one. You will need the extra boiler room to really take advantage of the high B.C. I am wondering though, from the pics, it appears to have a long bearing surface. If that is the case, that weight, coupled with a 7.5 twist, would or at least "probably would" translate into severe torque. Maybe enough torque to make it uncontrollable. But that is only an observation, actually trying them would be necessary. I will wait for the results to trickle in before I make the $$$ jump into that. BUT it could be a REALLY great F-Open combo if the torque is controllable!SAUM anyone?
I think keeping it real is important. That bullet will need horsepower to move it. With that horse power comes recoil. Most guys love the 284 platform so the trade off in BC and velocity will be the toss up. Yes it does look very appealing until you consider what cartridge will be sending it down range. Like Matt peetz said, it's gonna be a fine line for the gain. Another bullet is the new 147 eld-m with almost a .7 BC. Push that fast enough in a 6.5-284 and it's gonna be a major contender for the same spot.I think Joe is right with this one. I haven't been reading or hearing much about Bergers 195 grain 7mm offering, so the cynic in me tells me it's not really performing in F class (yes I have tried them in a 7/270 WSM) or it's performing so well that no one is sharing their success?
Will the Sierra fair any better? I certainly hope so.
Please let me know how you get on Joe.I'll be finding out real soon how the 195 Bergers work. Next Wednesday I'll be picking up my new 7SAUM barrel. I already have the Berger 195 and all the tools to go with it. I'm hoping to work up a load on the low node and use it on our next 1K yard match on January 8th.
However, I hope Sierra starts shipping those pills soon. I'm a big fan of having choices. IMO Sierra has seen the handwriting on the wall, either they step up their game or Lapua/Berger is going to monopolize the competitive bullet market.
Joe
1.713 longAnyone seen how long this bullet is, I haven't seen anything posted and wanted to plug into a calculator to see if 1:7.5 twist was truly necessary.
Thanks.
I wish they'd show some love for F-TR and make a sooper-dooper BC 30 cal in 200gr class instead of making another 284... not that it would matter, I've got more yellow boxes on the shelf than most B&Ms.
Is the 195 TMK not what you had in mind?
Any updates on how this bullet went in 8.5" 284?I did some testing with the Sierra 197's..Straight 284, 32" 1:8:5 twist..
I'll have to go back to my notes for exact numbers. My freebore is .215 so bullets were seated back into ththe case pretty deep. The bullets shoot just as good as the 183's do, but as mentioned above, the loss of velocity makes the performance about the same for the two with the 197 producing noticeable more recoil. I can get pretty close to 2800 fast with 4350, but it trashes my brass to do so. I plan on doing further testing soon, and will provide actual numbers.
