Show and tell: Pneumatic follower

No room. But I think a left handed tool on the front of the tool post would work for this. That would get the cutting point right up behind the follower plate
Have you got enough room to run a boring bar upside down? You could get the cutter basically hard up against the plate and it would be throwing swarf down into the chip trap when running in reverse.

Or left hand turning holder using maybe an 80° insert...
That's what I did last night poking around. I can't move the cutter too close to the rest, or I wont be able to reach the muzzle end of the barrel, because the tool holder will bump into the tailstock. I think I have it where I can taper everything up to the last 3 inches of a barrel. That's just right, for me.

I think I have the toolholder you need. Stand by for NEWS.

Aaron back to your build. Looks like you have an aluminum air manifold of some type (back top of your plate). Where did you source that? Also, did you end up putting that valve in? I have most of what I need ordered. Now it looks like I'll be buying a toolholder lol. I like these projects especially with winter in WI approaching. thanks

I made it.

I did put a valve on it, in a bad place... the valve handle interferes with the tool post handle. I didn't ever release the follower, so it's not a big deal. When I was done, I just pulled the air line off.

aaron, I figured you made it but I thought if you sourced it cheap on ebay, etc it would be worth my time to just buy one as I am not sure I have a tap of proper size. I'll figure it out. I get your point with the valve. thank you

Look up Polyconn manifolds on ebay, They are alum and you can find them NOS pretty cheap many times. I used them on my shop air project.

^ Yep. Tons of cheap manifolds. Amazon has anything you want. I just like to make them.

@DaveTooley That's super kind and awesome of you, but I already cut a left hand holder up for the task.

If I get bored I might make a custom tool post to hold it

I've been wanting a set of those. I have a bunch of DCMT holders and inserts. One of my favorites to use.

Good stuff, I will likely make one. Apologies if this was already covered but why did you go with three contacts offset from the cutting tool like a moving steady rest rather than two contacts aligned with the cutter like a traditional follow rest.

3 grabs nice and tight - and will follow the contour of the barrel.

All I need is a regulator, brackets, fittings and tubing to finish out the build. I would like to make one order to automation direct. 1/8" seems tiny and all my ports seem to measure to be a 3/8" hole? The AR2-213 or AR2-212 regulator appears to have an in and out larger than 1/8" as I eyeball the picture. I don't get it.

NPT measures the ID of the fitting, so a 1/8th NPT thread is "pretty big" looking.

For what it's worth I got my tubing and NPT fittings on amazon.
