Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Sir, my neighbor and I had shoulder surgery almost at the same time 9 years back. I had bone spurs removed and tendons repaired, he had a shoulder replacement. Had the surgeries first of the year, so that we can get back doing our hobbies by summer. Both of us recovered. Do the PT and keep up with it.

I just had revers shoulder replacement. Last Monday. One night in hospital and home. It's been 13 days and doing great. Take a couple Tylenol but pain is very little. I'm 71 years old and plan to keep shooting. Mostly 22 RF and 6 BR in br matches. I gave up big guns long ago because of shoulder pain. I was a carpenter for 50+ years.nlooking forward to this summer shoots. The ball on my shoulder had a large hole in the top that would pinch the tissue every time I moved my arm. Been that way for several years. Should have done it sooner but have all winter to get going again. Tom.
Befor sugary I told the Dr. that I was a shooter . Before I finished he wondered if that was a threatlol. Nice to have a little humor in these situations.

Has anyone had a shoulder replacement surgery and continued shooting center fire rifles. I am told that I have no cartilage in either shoulder. I get cortisone shots ever three months but they are becoming less effective as time goes by. At the rate I am going, I may have to stop shooting are at least go to rimfire before too long.

What is the recovery like and how long are you incapacitated after surgery? I am 85 years old and have put this off for a very long time. In my entire 85 years, I have never had surgery and am not looking forward to it now.

No one I know has every had this. Guess they all passed away before needing it.
I broke my collar bone twice and then broke my shoulder while tearing the labrum and rotator cuff all at the same. Rehabbed hard and still playing competitive tournament softball and shooting. Doesn’t really give me problems any more. Good luck with the shoulder brother.

What has been said about finding the best surgeon… That will help you a lot down the road. If you have any complications they have the knowledge and resources to help you. My wife had hers done on 12-8-21 and I’m playing nurse right now. I had Surgury done on my right shoulder 2 years ago February. I could not raise my arm up to fire a pistol and was in a lot of pain. I have pretty good ran of motion but it still hurts. I had a Double Bicep tear, Labrum tear, Rotator cuff tear, and he ground down my scapula and clavicle. Very painful but it’s better now. I still shoot .308’s but prefer the recoil of the 6mm. Haven’t shot a shot gun nor do I want to. Make sure to do the physical therapy and continue to do so at home afterwards. Good Luck To You.
Looked at your title, mine was repair, not replacement. You will do fine just make sure to get a good surgeon.

Best wishes, Nick. Some good advice in the previous posts. Find a good surgeon and make sure you like his team. The rehab part is key. Do it. Do not 'try'. Remember, you can negotiate with a terrorist, not a therapist.
I had both knees replaced 9 years ago, took about 4 months to be back on the Harley and a few more to be completely done. Patience is key to recovery.
Our prayers are with you.

Thank you for this. I am going to hold out till winter sets in as I don't want to give up any chance to get to the range while it is warm enough to shoot. This past month has been really bad for me as I could feel the rough edges grating against each other. Thankfully, I was able to get cortisone shots in both shoulders yesterday.

I have been getting these for the last several years and they really do return my range of movement and there is little pain unless I am not careful and within 24 hours, it really makes a difference. I know these won't work forever, as the duration of relief diminishes after each set of shots and you can only get them every three months. X Rays show nothing but raw bone in the joint.

Yesterday my doctor, with whom I have always had the utmost faith in, informed that he is no longer doing shoulder replacements and now only does knee and hip surgeries. He turns shoulder work over to a colleague. That bummed me out some. I don't anything about this new doctor and will now have to do more research to find someone I can trust.

Oh the trials and tribulations of old age.

Find a Dr that does a lot of them and specializes in shoulders. Had mine done in Jackson WY. Dr Williams. He is a great Dr. Good luck. Where do you live?
